Construction creates large amounts of waste products, and the manufacturing of new construction materials uses a lot of resources and energy. A lot of this waste consists of new products that are considered waste due to a miscalculation in ordering, and that are not reused or returned for economic reasons. The German startup Restado offers an online marketplace where constructors can sell leftover materials through a system specifically designed to the needs of the construction industry. They also collaborate with logistics companies to ensure regional transport and to gather high amounts of leftover materials from large construction projects.
The construction industry produces about half of all global waste. This is particularly problematic because many construction materials are also very resource-intensive in their production, and part of the reason why 23% of global CO2 emissions are produced in this industry. Unused resources are often destroyed, because their transport or storage is not financially viable. This represents a major inefficiency, as most materials destroyed in that way would be perfectly usable goods.
Restado is a German startup that provides a specialised platform to sell leftover construction materials to both construction firms and individual customers that want to improve their home. The platform has created a special entry form that collects specific data about the products, making it easier to use than general selling sites by delivering more precise product information. Restado also collaborates with other companies, especially in logistics, to ensure regional transport. They also try to collaborate with large-scale logistics and construction corporations that clean up large construction sites in order to bring resources from there to Restado rather than seeing them being thrown away.
In five years, Restado has managed to establish itself as a part of the e-commerce market in construction. They are currently looking to expand their offerings to larger-scale projects in order to increase the amount of construction materials offered on the page. The startup also does work to build awareness: On their homepage, they have released a guide to construction which offers information to home workers, and they are looking to collaborate with other industry actors in order to improve their efficiency in reusing materials.
