The principles of a circular economy concern designing out waste, regenerating ecosystems and keeping items in use. Decoupling the economy from material flows—improving the rate of resource productivity faster than the economic growth rate—is also a consistent guide. By evolving with the growing number of applications of circular economy principles, and consolidating these strategies across thematic areas, Circle Economy’s Key Elements Framework (KE) renders the elements of the circular economy salient and serves as a basis to derive contextual strategies and interventions. 


The Framework consists of:
- Core Elements: Activities directly handling product or material flows; and uniquely,
- Enabling Elements: those that remove obstacles for core actors.

Based on the work of [Bocken et al. (2016)](https://www.researchgate.net/publication/309699661_Product_design_and_business_model_strategies_for_a_circular_economy), the Four Flows Framework serves as a simple framework for managing resource flows in a circular economy by using less (Narrow), using for longer (Slow), using again (Cycle), and using clean, regenerative materials and energy (Regenerate).

These different principles of circular economy can be applied to our socioeconomic metabolism: we can design stocks like buildings, infrastructure, machinery, and vehicles to be rich resource mines for the future, and design manufactured goods and consumables to be cycled and made regenerative. Furthermore, the focus must also centre on getting more value out of fewer materials. Achieving the aims of a circular economy—minimising material use, regenerating the Earth, and preventing material losses—can be done through these four key strategies mentioned above.

Reformation is a fashion brand, which practively measures and reduces energy use in its operations. The Reformation factory uses efficient, eco-friendly and pro-social technologies and practices. Reformation invest in green building infrastructure to minimize waste, water, and energy footprints. Refrormation source electricity offsets from 100% wind power suppliers and use LED lighting and Energy Star-rated appliances in their offices. They recycle, compost organic wastes, and recycle or donate textile scraps . Zero waste is our goal, and the brand is currently recycycling 75% of all waste.

World Circular Textiles Day takes place every year on 8th October. Our vision is to galvanise the collective ambitions and goals of people, organisations and businesses to reach a fully circular textiles world by 2050. Our mission is to provide a framework for circularity stakeholders to develop and deliver a collaborative, evolving roadmap and to chart circularity’s momentum annually from the 8th of October until 2050.

What does fully circular by 2050 mean?
- Shared textile resources, in the form of products and raw materials, are kept in **continual circulation**.
- Virgin resources are **replaced with circular materials**.
- Dignity, equity, and equality for the **people** involved in all parts of the circular value chain.

We need to know where we stand today to chart how to get to 100% Circularity by 2050. What circular activity is currently happening in the textiles and apparel industry, and where in the world is it happening? The WCTD Collection aims to answer this question by building the world’s largest digital library of circular textiles case studies.

Imagine a time when…the raw materials that are used to make things are sourced from existing products and regenerative agriculture, via carbon negative and climate neutral processes. Biodegradable raw materials are used for products with biodegradable end routes. Toxic chemicals have been washed out of the global materials pool, disposed of safely and replaced with beneficial alternatives. Virgin fibres made from fossil fuels have been banned, while secondary synthetic fibres, derived from what was already in the system, are kept in constant circulation as a resource. Circularity accounting methods, built on science-based metrics, help to manage a balanced system of resources, across all industries, and in line with the planet’s environmental limits.

Products and services are designed for multiple use and material value retention, with maximum positive impact.

DETAIL: 
Imagine a time when…products flow via optimal collection and distribution streams into reusable and repairable product platforms. Reuse and access models are dominant, and products are designed for multiple recirculation before biodegrading (if designed to do so), or being broken down into reusable raw materials for production. People only consume what they need. Production and consumption wastes have been fully eliminated and multifunctional, season-less and timeless fashions are the norm, yet still fulfil our human need for expression and creativity without constraint. All business models, organisations, governments and citizens play a role in maintaining a healthy, functioning circular ecosystem.

Products and Services

Cycle strategies aim to cycle and reuse materials at their highest value: they maximise the volume of secondary materials re-entering the economy, ultimately minimising the need for virgin material inputs and therefore also narrowing flows. Of course, virgin materials will always be needed to a degree: all materials degrade and can’t be cycled infinitely, use energy, and require blending with virgin materials to maintain strength and functionality.

Whilst no two countries are the same, there are still obvious similarities between some of them, with discernible development patterns and parallels in evidence. Common problems and shared solutions help place unique country identities and individual issues in context.

Whilst this classification is far from clear-cut and exhibits some overlap, it does underline how the discourse on transitioning to a circular economy needs to account for both differences and commonalities, if we are to arrive at a more strategic and instructive analysis. It also allows to highlight a set of key themes that are likely to be central to the countries that fall under the respective profiles.

A framework to distinguish between different country profiles and their circular transition needs.

It is 2050.  Full systems change has taken place. This wouldn’t have been possible without the immediate action and radical steps taken from 2020 onwards. Many targets had to be identified in the early 2020s and achieved by 2030 to ensure that the 2050 goal happened in full. A sense of urgency, turbo stakeholder collaboration, supportive government regulation and clear, data driven targets enabled the mindsets and systems change needed to transform to a fully circular textiles ecosystem.

A circular economics model underpins what we have created. It reflects and supports a living organism made up of makers, users and restorers, interacting across vibrant and interconnected networks. Checks and balances, alongside transparency and accountability, ensure a healthy system. Financial, environmental, and social metrics have the purpose of serving communities and the planet. There is shared ownership of profit and loss – across all three metrics – throughout the value chain.

The Circular City Actions Framework provides urban changemakers with five complementary strategies they can use to start working towards a more circular system. 

The framework is action-based to provide users with concrete strategic directions and showcase the desired outcomes of each strategy. 
The framework consists of five complementary **strategies**, under which **sub-strategies** provide further detail. Finally, each sub-strategy consists of a diversity of tangible **solutions** which are framed in relation to key thematic areas.

Based on the ongoing ISO standardisation process, a taxonomy has been defined under which to cluster indicators to measure circularity.

This is a survey that dives into understanding the policy environment around specific circular solutions.

     June 9, 2022 9:57AM ET   Reformation returns to its roots with deadstock drops this month. The Southern California brand announced a limited-edition collection of gauze dresses, tops and skirts made entirely of deadstock fabrics, with prices starting at $68 and releasing throughout June starting Wednesday.

Reformation‘s sustainable focus began in 2009 with capsules made from repurposed vintage apparel and surplus materials. It has since expanded to include innovative green fabrics, from cellulose-based formulations like Tencel lyocell and Refibra to recycled cashmere, recycled cotton, Econyl regenerated nylon, alpaca wool and viscose.
The deadstock assortment includes knit tops, mini, midi and formal dresses, two-piece sets and more in solid neutrals, brights, checks, florals and other motifs. 
Products in the collection are made from verified leftover and over-ordered materials sourced from designers and fashion warehouses offloading unwanted inventory. This approach means Reformation can avoid producing new fabrics and creating new waste while accessing unique patterns and fabrications. The project supports the company’s goal to reuse as much existing raw material as possible, as textiles account for roughly 6 percent of U.S. waste landfilled every year, according to Reformation.
 Reformation sources deadstock fabrics in line with its fiber standards focused on water input, energy and land use, eco-toxicity, greenhouse gas emissions, human impact, availability and price. Leftover materials are ranked an “A” according to the company’s fiber standards due to their potential for circularity and rapid renewability. Reformation has committed to sourcing only plant-based textiles for the deadstock line, which supports the brand’s goal of recirculating 500,000 garments over five years.

We make everything from low-impact materials, rescued deadstock fabrics, and repurposed vintage clothing. Ref products are designed, shot, and shipped at our facilities in Los Angeles. We also make some of our stuff in our LA factory, and the rest at sustainable partner factories around the world. We get to know all of our partners, so we can answer “who made our clothes” at every level of the supply chain, and ensure positive environmental and social impacts of our stuff.
 Every week, we put out new, limited edition collections. We start with small quantities of each product, and only make more if we know you want it, based on direct data and feedback. This keeps our production less wasteful, and exclusive, so no one at the party will be wearing the same dress as you. We like making you feel special.

Reformation’s design mission is to make effortless silhouettes that celebrate the feminine figure. The design process starts with us thinking about what we really want to wear right now. We source the most beautiful and sustainable fabrics possible to bring those designs to life quickly.




 



 
 


Most fashion is designed 12-18 months before it’s released, but at Ref a sketch can become a dress in about a month. We’re designing and making what you want to wear right now. We believe the perfect fit is the most important part of our clothes. We spend hours fitting on different bodies and have a meticulous approach to our fits. Our main range is fit on multiple women that are between 5′6 and 5′10. We also launched a petites collection designed for ladies 5′2 and under, an extended sizes collection going up to size 22, as well as a collection specially designed to fit women with a full C-DD cup. These capsules based on body types are just the first steps in our quest to make sure women of many shapes and sizes can wear Ref (and look damn good doing it).Ref fiber standardsUp to 2/3 of the sustainability impact of fashion happens at the raw materials stage - before the clothes have actually been made. Fiber selection also affects how you’re gonna wash the garment, and potentially recycle it one day - both important factors to consider when it comes to the environmental impact. That’s why we have Ref standards, or basically different classifications based on their combined social and environmental impact.
We tried to make these standards as holistic as possible, taking into consideration water input, energy input, land use, eco-toxicity, greenhouse gas emissions, human toxicity, availability and price. We also looked at garment care implications, like microfiber shedding.
We have five categories:
A–Allstars
Natural fibers that are rapidly renewable, plant-based and have a potential for circularity.
B–Better than most
B fibers are almost all natural or recycled fibers.
C–Could be better
Fibers in the C category are better alternatives than more commonly used fibers, but not as innovative.
D–Don’t use unless certified
D’s require certifications for raw material cultivation (i.e. organic), animal welfare, traceability or wet processing (i.e. Bluesign)
E–Eww, never
E fibers are too environmentally or socially intensive, and don’t meet our sustainability criteria. We'll only source these fibers if they are necessary for specific fabric construction and performance and we try to use Our goal is to have 100% of our fabrics be from recycled, regenerative or renewable materials by 2025.

Fiber selection affects how you’re going to wash the garment and potentially recycle it one day. That’s why we have our own Ref fiber standard. We tried to make these as holistic as possible, taking into consideration water input, energy input, land use, eco-toxicity, greenhouse gas emissions, human toxicity, availability, and price.
A–Allstars
TENCEL™ Lyocell
We think TENCEL™ is the holy grail of fibers for fabrics. Made by Austrian company Lenzing, TENCEL™ Lyocell is a regenerated cellulose fiber with properties almost identical to cotton. It’s part of the Rayon family, made from renewable wood materials.
TENCEL™ is manufactured mainly from Eucalyptus tree farms, which grow fast and thick on low-grade land. It takes just half an acre to grow enough trees for one ton of TENCEL™ fiber. Cotton needs at least five times as much land—plus, it must be good quality farmland. TENCEL™ production is done without the use of pesticides or insecticides (unlike its dirty cousin, cotton).
While these trees don’t need irrigation, water is still used to process the pulp and turn it into TENCEL™ fiber. Lenzing estimates its water use at 155 gallons per pound of fiber, which is 80% less than cotton.

TENCEL™ has a closed loop production process, meaning over 99% of the non-toxic solvent is captured and reused in the system instead of being flushed out as wastewater. And don’t just take our word for it: TENCEL™ fibers are certified by the European eco-label Oeko Tex 100 as containing low levels of manufacturing chemicals and byproducts.

TENCEL ™ X REFIBRA™
REFIBRA™ combines up to 30% of upcycled cotton scraps with wood pulp to produce new virgin TENCEL™ Lyocell fibers. By incorporating cotton trimmings it helps avoid waste problems and provides a solution for a circular economy--basically doubling the goodness of TENCEL™.

Recycled cotton
Recycled cotton is repurposed from either pre-or post-consumer cotton waste that would otherwise be waste and go to landfill. It allows us to have that soft cotton feel without the environmental impact that comes from virgin cotton.

Deadstock & Vintage
Up to 5% of our products are made out of “deadstock” fabrics. Textiles make up almost 6% of the trash entering U.S. landfills every year. We buy verified old, leftover, and over-ordered fabric from other designers and fabric warehouses. This allows us to reuse and divert these materials from the landfill and into your closet. It looks better than it sounds.

About 2–5% of our stuff is made out of vintage clothing. We buy vintage pieces from wholesalers across the US to repurpose into new pieces. This includes bulk vintage denim, cashmere and other materials that we refashion and include in our collections. We also source lots of one-of-a-kind stuff for our stores. Remanufactured clothing can save more than 13,000 pounds of CO2 emissions per person, per year. Also, it’s super cute.



 



 
 



 

 



 
 



 
 


B–Better than most
Linen
Linen is made from flax. We love flax because it grows quickly, uses basically no water, and can be processed without hazardous chemicals. People have been wearing linen for forever because it’s super durable, versatile, and has natural cooling properties. As an extra plus, most of our linen is made in mills that are Oeko-Tex 100 certified.
TENCEL™ Modal
TENCEL™ Modal is also a wood based fiber. TENCEL™ Modal is processed from sustainably managed beechwood forests in northern and central Europe. Fiber yield of beechwood trees is 2 times higher than that of cotton plants. Plus, trees require less fertilizers!
Viscose
The majority of our woven fabric is made of viscose – AKA rayon – which is another synthetic, wood-based fiber. We’re super committed to making sure the forests we source from are conserved, protected, and restored. That’s why we work with the non-profit group Canopy to help drive positive change for all our forest products, engage our suppliers and staff, and ensure all our forest-based products come from sustainably managed forests. We are also signatories to the Changing Markets Roadmap, and have made a public commitment to clean up viscose supply chains by reducing the environmental impact of our viscose and pushing for responsible production practices. Recycled cashmere
We get why everyone loves cashmere. It's warm and cozy and super delicious against your skin. Unfortunately, the global demand for it has led to goats overgrazing in Mongolia. It's basically turning grasslands into deserts. That's why we use recycled cashmere. Recycled cashmere yarns are made from repurposed, regenerated cashmere clippings and knitwear to produce the same smooth feel as conventional cashmere. On average 1 kg of recycled cashmere has 80% less of the environmental impact than conventional cashmere. Talk about a cozy win-win.




 

 

 
 



C–Could be better
ECONYL® regenerated nylon
ECONYL® is made out of 100% regenerated nylon - which means no waste and no new resources were harmed in the production. It actually rescues waste from oceans and landfills like fishing nets, carpet fluff, and fabric scraps. We use ECONYL® fibers for our solid dyed swim. As an extra plus, ECONYL® is Oeko-Tex certified which ensures that there are no hazardous chemicals used in dyeing the fabric.
Alpaca
Alpaca wool is a renewable fiber that has a much lower environmental impact than most sweater yarns. Compared to conventional wool, each pound of alpaca wool saves 110 gallons of water. Alpacas are mostly raised in the Peruvian highlands almost exclusively on small family-owned ranches, where each is given one acre of land to graze, giving the grassland ample time to regenerate. Unlike goats and other herd animals, alpacas have soft hooves and gentle eating habits that limit soil erosion and plant destruction. More importantly, they're sheared only once a year under humane conditions!
D–Don't use unless certified
Silk
Certified silk is silk that has a clean chemistry certification like Bluesign or Oeko-Tex Standard 100. This means the products are good for the environment, workers and customers. We require Bluesign certification for all solid dyed silks and prefer it for prints. We require Oeko-Tex certification and digital print processing for any facilities that are not Bluesign certified.

Leather
We prioritize using leather that is sourced from Leather Working Group (LWG) certified Gold and Silver Rated tanneries that are committed to chemical innovation and lower impact methods. We are exploring innovative synthetic alternatives but a perfect solution, free of fossil fuels is not yet market-ready. Until a viable leather replacement that checks all of our sustainability boxes is available at scale we will source leathers as they are a by-production of the meat industry. We are working closely with our supply chain to trace the hides we use back to the farm level, to assure zero deforestation policies are in place. We will support farmers and industry partners that are pioneering traceability programs, land management and restoration work.

This first-of-its-kind [**Circularity Gap Report Textiles**](https://www.circularity-gap.world/textiles)—the pioneering global Circularity Gap Report for an industry—examines how materials flow throughout the entire textile value chain, from design to post-consumer management. It explores how materials are extracted, transformed and managed at their end-of-life—from cotton farming and petrochemical production to spinning, weaving and dyeing to product assembly and distribution—and delves into the resource and energy inputs of each stage. This report focuses on the textiles, clothing, leather and footwear (TLCF) industries, including those used for home furnishings and upholstery, but excludes technical textiles, such as those used by the medical and automotive industries. The findings emphasise the industry’s resource-intensive practices, its contribution to the overshoot of several planetary boundaries, and the necessary systemic changes required to transition to a more sustainable and circular model.

The world is seriously off track in its effort to halve per-capita food waste and losses by 2030.The COVID-19 pandemic has had significant impacts on consumption and production patterns, with disruptions to global supply chains and changes in consumer behaviour. 

Responsible consumption and production must be an integral part of the recovery from the pandemic. 
But the global economy also needs to speed up the decoupling of economic growth from resource use by maximizing the socio-economic benefits of resources while minimizing their negative impacts. 

Reporting on corporate sustainability has tripled since the beginning of the SDG period, but the private sector will need to significantly improve reporting on activities that contribute to the SDGs. 

This primarily entails environmentally sound management of "toxic chemicals" A substantial use of chemicals is essential to meet the social and economic goals of the world community, and these can be used with a high degree of safety when best practices are followed.  Gross chemical contamination, with grave damage to human health, genetic structures reproductive outcomes, and the environment, has been continuing within some of the world's most important industrial areas, and restoration will require major investment as well as the development of new techniques.
Effective control of the generation, storage, treatment, recycling and reuse, transport, recovery and disposal of hazardous wastes is another similar challenge. 
In addition,  solid wastes include all domestic refuse and non-hazardous wastes such as commercial and institutional wastes, street sweepings construction debris, and, in some countries, human wastes. As hazardous waste is frequently intermixed with other waste, this poses particular management challenges.
Finally, this target ensures that radioactive waste is safely managed, transported, stored and disposed of, with a view to protecting human health and the environment. 

To deliver SDG12, it is crucial to implement policies that support the shift to sustainable practices and decouple economic growth from resource use.

12. Responsible consumption and production

Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns

Regenerate strategies phase out hazardous or toxic materials and processes and substitute them with regenerative biomass resources. A circular economy aims to mimic natural cycles—by shifting to more regenerative farming practices, for example—while also maximising the share of circular biomass that enters the economy. Regeneration can happen both at the systems level (by designing regenerative processes) as well as at the product level (by switching synthetic to organic fertilisers, for example).

**These 17 Goals recognize that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests.**

The SDGs build on decades of work by countries and the UN, and especially on the Millennium Declaration adopted in September 2000 at UN Headquarters in New York which let to the elaboration of eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to reduce extreme poverty by 2015.

In 2015, the Paris Agreement was signed. A major blueprint came out of this: The Sustainable Development Goals: 17 overarching goals—and 169 targets—that governments are aiming to meet by 2030. Significant progress has been made in terms of poverty, health and inequality, but there's still a way to go. This is where the circular economy comes in: by circulating resources multiple times, the circular economy tackles issues of scarcity and allows all to access what they need—without overburdening the earth. If it's implemented in a holistic way—affording attention to social considerations and the fair distribution of resources— it also offers a pathway for achieving the SDGs; and the link between the two is ever-growing. It is the Division for Sustainable Development Goals (DSDG) in the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) which provides substantive support and capacity-building for the SDGs and their related thematic issues. TheDSDG plays a key role in the evaluation of UN systemwide implementation of the 2030 Agenda and in advocacy and outreach activities relating to the SDGs. In order to make the 2030 Agenda a reality, broad ownership of the SDGs must translate into a strong commitment by all stakeholders to implement the global goals. DSDG aims to help facilitate this engagement.
Alongside this, the annual High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development serves as the central UN platform for the follow-up and review of the SDGs.
In addition, the UN Secretary-General presents an annual SDG Progress report, which is developed in cooperation with the UN System, and based on the global indicator framework and data produced by national statistical systems and information collected at the regional level.
