World Circular Textiles Day takes place every year on 8th October.  Our vision is to galvanise the collective ambitions and goals of people, organisations and businesses to reach a fully circular textiles world by 2050. Our mission is to provide a framework for circularity stakeholders to develop and deliver a collaborative, evolving roadmap and to chart circularity’s momentum annually from the 8th of October until 2050.

What does fully circular by 2050 mean?
- Shared textile resources, in the form of products and raw materials, are kept in **continual circulation**.
- Virgin resources are **replaced with circular materials**.
- Dignity, equity, and equality for the **people** involved in all parts of the circular value chain.

We need to know where we stand today to chart how to get to 100% Circularity by 2050. What circular activity is currently happening in the textiles and apparel industry, and where in the world is it happening? The WCTD Collection aims to answer this question by building the world’s largest digital library of circular textiles case studies.

Imagine a time when…products flow via optimal collection and distribution streams into reusable and repairable product platforms. Reuse and access models are dominant, and products are designed for multiple recirculation before biodegrading (if designed to do so), or being broken down into reusable raw materials for production. People only consume what they need. Production and consumption wastes have been fully eliminated and multifunctional, season-less and timeless fashions are the norm, yet still fulfil our human need for expression and creativity without constraint. Manufactured goods, such as vehicles, textiles, appliances and equipment and their associated production processes are big employers but:
- production processes often rely on fossil fuels and currently drive one-third of the overshoot on the climate change planetary boundary due to its GHG production, 
- material- and energy-intensive industrial activities are linked to deforestation and drive 15% on both the land use and freshwater planetary boundaries, 
- manufacturing goods results in substantial amounts of hazardous industrial waste and leaks chemicals into the environment.

Here, circular solutions must tackle the full value chain, but material demand must also shrink: this will necessitate a societal shift to favouring sufficiency over excess and reducing consumption to sustainable levels. Our four key solutions for manufactured goods are:
- Mainstream industrial symbiosis and efficiency : Achieve process improvements, scrap diversion and reduction in yield losses through greater industrial symbiosis and efficiency. Foster tighter collaboration within and between industries to deliver powerful material and emissions savings.
- Extend the lifetime of machinery, equipment, and goods: Maximise the lifetime of goods that serve our daily needs to bring a number of environmental benefits. 
- Buy what's needed: Reduce the number of purchases of common electronic goods, appliances, and other equipment to sufficiency levels. 
- Eschew fast fashion in favour of sustainable textiles: Drastically reduce new clothing purchases. All used clothing should go on to be repaired, reused or, if needed, recycled appropriately. Prioritise natural and local textile manufacturing, as well as higher-quality and more durable garments.

Cycle strategies aim to cycle and reuse materials at their highest value: they maximise the volume of secondary materials re-entering the economy, ultimately minimising the need for virgin material inputs and therefore also narrowing flows. Of course, virgin materials will always be needed to a degree: all materials degrade and can’t be cycled infinitely, use energy, and require blending with virgin materials to maintain strength and functionality.

The principles of a circular economy concern designing out waste, regenerating ecosystems and keeping items in use. Decoupling the economy from material flows—improving the rate of resource productivity faster than the economic growth rate—is also a consistent guide. By evolving with the growing number of applications of circular economy principles, and consolidating these strategies across thematic areas, Circle Economy’s Key Elements Framework (KE) renders the elements of the circular economy salient and serves as a basis to derive contextual strategies and interventions. 


The Framework consists of:
- Core Elements: Activities directly handling product or material flows; and uniquely,
- Enabling Elements: those that remove obstacles for core actors.

Circle Economy's framework of strategies and activities that define the circular economy

It is 2050.  Full systems change has taken place. This wouldn’t have been possible without the immediate action and radical steps taken from 2020 onwards. Many targets had to be identified in the early 2020s and achieved by 2030 to ensure that the 2050 goal happened in full. A sense of urgency, turbo stakeholder collaboration, supportive government regulation and clear, data driven targets enabled the mindsets and systems change needed to transform to a fully circular textiles ecosystem.

A circular economics model underpins what we have created. It reflects and supports a living organism made up of makers, users and restorers, interacting across vibrant and interconnected networks. Checks and balances, alongside transparency and accountability, ensure a healthy system. Financial, environmental, and social metrics have the purpose of serving communities and the planet. There is shared ownership of profit and loss – across all three metrics – throughout the value chain.

The Circular City Actions Framework provides urban changemakers with five complementary strategies they can use to start working towards a more circular system. 

The framework is action-based to provide users with concrete strategic directions and showcase the desired outcomes of each strategy. 
The framework consists of five complementary **strategies**, under which **sub-strategies** provide further detail. Finally, each sub-strategy consists of a diversity of tangible **solutions** which are framed in relation to key thematic areas.

Based on the work of [Bocken et al. (2016)](https://www.researchgate.net/publication/309699661_Product_design_and_business_model_strategies_for_a_circular_economy), the Four Flows Framework serves as a simple framework for managing resource flows in a circular economy by using less (Narrow), using for longer (Slow), using again (Cycle), and using clean, regenerative materials and energy (Regenerate).

These different principles of circular economy can be applied to our socioeconomic metabolism: we can design stocks like buildings, infrastructure, machinery, and vehicles to be rich resource mines for the future, and design manufactured goods and consumables to be cycled and made regenerative. Furthermore, the focus must also centre on getting more value out of fewer materials. Achieving the aims of a circular economy—minimising material use, regenerating the Earth, and preventing material losses—can be done through these four key strategies mentioned above.

 Ships can shut down their engines while berthed and plug into an onshore power source, the ship’s power load is transferred to the onshore power supply without disruption to onboard services. Emissions to the local surroundings are eliminated Onshore power supply (OPS) is also know as  Shore side electricity (SEE), Shore Connection, Shore-to-ship Power, Cold ironing, Alternative Maritime Power, etc. Shore power is especially applicable to ships operating on dedicated routes and vessels that consume large amounts of power and emit high levels of air pollutants when berthed. Typical vessel types include ferries, cruise ships, LNG carriers, tankers and container ships.  In the figure below a general design of high-voltage OPS facilities is given. An electrical cable is extended from the pier and plugged into the ship’s receptacle to supply power to operate the machinery, allowing the ship to shut down the diesel engines that normally drive the electrical generators. 

  International standards and OPS facilities    Shore-to-ship power standards overview: IEC / ISO / IEEE 80005-1, High Voltage shore side electricity (up to 20 MVA per vessel) IEC / ISO / IEEE 80005-2, Communication Protocol IEC / ISO / IEEE 80005-3, Low Voltage shore side (typically less than 1 MVA). IEC: International Electrotechnical Commission; IEEE: Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers; ISO: International Standardisation Organisation Since August 2012 there is an international standard for the plug used when connecting a ship. From a technical perspective, the various implementations worldwide have proven the viability of the technology. The frequency conversion issue (50hHz versus 60Hz) has been covered by main manufacturers since several years and a global standard provides worldwide guidance on safety and compatibility (standardised plugs and cables). This High Voltage Shore Connection standard has been validated in August 2012 by IEC, ISO and IEEE (80005-1) and enables to cover most of European ship traffic (Roro, Ferry, containers, tankers, LNG and cruise ships).to the port OPS facility. The plug is for high-voltage connection systems (HVSC) and the standard is named ISO/IEC/IEEE 80005-1. According to the IEC the standard is applicable to the design, installation and testing of HVSC systems and addresses among other things shore-to-ship connection and interface equipment. It does not apply to the electrical power supply during docking periods, e.g. dry docking and other out of service maintenance and repair.  The standard 80005-2 regulates the communication between ship and shore. This standard allows the onshore part of SSE to be remote-controlled from the ship. The standard 80005-3 regulates Low Voltage shore side electricity. Most components used in OPS installations are standard and widely used in various types of electrical equipments in other industries. Thereby, there is no technical barrier anymore to the development of OPS in Europe. What investments are required on shore side to install SSE infrastructure? A OPS installation typically requires a building, or a shelter, containing the necessary technical equipment that include switchgear, transformers and frequency converters which aim is to adapt the shore electrical characteristics to the ship's ones (voltage, frequency..etc.). According to the ISO IEC IEEE 80005-1 standard, for cruise, ferry, Roro & Ropax, and cargo ships, the cables management system should also be on the shore side. The cost of an investment in OPS is likely to be very different from one port to another. It mainly depends on the ship type and the power requirement: the higher the power demand is, more expensive it will be. Hence, an OPS for a cruise berth (requiring up to 20MVA) is likely to be more expensive than an installation for a ferry.  What investments are required on ship side to enable them to plug into OPS infrastructure? As for ports, rarely are two ships identical: it is therefore difficult to describe any specific technical requirements applying equally to all ships. However, most ships’ retrofits require modification of the main switchboard, a new receiving circuit breaker close to the power receiving point, power socket(s) and an upgrade of the ship power management system. In addition, some mechanical modifications are needed (build a door on the hull to receive the socket outlet as well as the cables) and in case of a container ship, the cable management shall be installed on board instead of the socket(s) (based on ISO IEC IEEE 80005-1 standard). Finally, the ship owner will have to request the certification of the installation by the corresponding classification societies. A very rough thumb value of the investment costs including cabling would be: 500K€ to 1M€. But it must be underlined that this investment is only needed in the case of retrofit of ships. But OPS is nowadays already installed in the majority of newly built ships, directly during the construction phase, which drastically reduces the costs for ship owners. Application and advantages of OPS When berthed, ships require electricity to support activities like loading, unloading, heating, lighting and operation of other technical installations. Normally, the ships’ propulsion engines are turned o when berthed and the power needed is provided by auxiliary engines that are running on diesel oil or other fossil-based fuel. Most of the new cruise ships, which are the biggest single sources for air emission in a port, use diesel electric propulsion system and get the all the electricity they need from the same generators. Exhausts from the auxiliary engines affect the environment negatively both locally and globally by emissions of CO2 and other air pollutants.  Since 2010 a European Union directive (2005/33/EC) limits the sulphur content in marine fuel to 0.1% (from 1%) for ships at berth (see directive for exemptions) in order to reduce the emissions discharge from vessels. Ships can either choose to use an alternative ship fuel while at berth, or to connect to shore-side electricity, that is, OPS.  The use of OPS reduces the negative environmental aspects of ships, such as noise and air pollution, since the ships’ auxiliary engines can be switched off. Moreover, implementation of OPS provides an opportunity not only to improve air quality, but also to reduce emissions of CO2, one of the main contributors to global warming.  General design of high-voltage OPS facilities. DNV GL is an international accredited registrar and classification society headquartered in Høvik, Norway. It is the largest classification company for shipping globally. A section on OPS is included in its RULES FOR CLASSIFICATION SHIPS (Part 6 Additional class notations, Chapter 7 Environmental protection and pollution control, Section 5 Electrical Shore Connections (edition July 2019). The objective of the additional class notation Shore power is to provide requirements for a transfer of power utilizing an electrical shore connection while in port.  Additional class notation Shore power provides requirements for the design of electrical shore connections, the ship side installation of necessary equipment and the verification of the installations.  The system design comprises the following aspects:           —  system functionality of the electrical shore connection as a total system. In addition, requirements to circuit breakers, earthing switches and protective functions are given            —  control systems and control system interface between the shore and the vessel. Requirements are given for necessary functionality. However, the physical installations on shore are not covered by these rules            —  ship side electrical equipment and installations. However, only specific requirements related to electrical shore connections are given. Generally, equipment and installations shall comply with relevant parts of Pt.4 Ch.8.   Operational characteristics and requirements with respect to power availability during loading and unloading are not within the scope of these rules.  Shore side electrical equipment and installations, apart from the functional requirements to the installation, are governed by national regulations, and are not a part of these rules. The additional class notation Shore power is not intended for shore connections used during service and maintenance docking.The additional class notation Shore power applies to vessels utilizing electrical shore connections while in port and is mandatory for vessels with high voltage shore connection and low voltage shore connection with power rating greater than or equal to 1 MVA. This is applicable for shore power supplying the distribution grid and/or charging electrical energy storage systems onboard the vessel.

<p>According to the World Environment Fund ( WWF), more than half of plastic becomes waste less than a year after it was produced, and most are sent to landfills or incinerators, rather than recycled or reused. Few countries have achieved significant rates of separate collection for plastic, which would ensure the steady supply of plastic material for recycling. Unfortunately in Egypt, the disposal system for different types of waste is not well established. UpFuse, Egyptian Start-up is fighting the plastic waste problem by upcycling single-used plastic bags and by converting them into bags, totes and accessory cases.</p>

Whilst no two countries are the same, there are still obvious similarities between some of them, with discernible development patterns and parallels in evidence. Common problems and shared solutions help place unique country identities and individual issues in context.

Based on the ongoing ISO standardisation process, a taxonomy has been defined under which to cluster indicators to measure circularity.
