This collection has been built by a community of passionate researchers, students, and industry professionals as part of <a href="https://worldcirculartextilesday.com/" target="_blank">World Circular Textiles Day</a> (WCTD). 


World Circular Textiles Day takes place every year on 8th October.  Our vision is to galvanise the collective ambitions and goals of people, organisations and businesses to reach a fully circular textiles world by 2050. Our mission is to provide a framework for circularity stakeholders to develop and deliver a collaborative, evolving roadmap and to chart circularity’s momentum annually from the 8th of October until 2050.

What does fully circular by 2050 mean?
- Shared textile resources, in the form of products and raw materials, are kept in **continual circulation**.
- Virgin resources are **replaced with circular materials**.
- Dignity, equity, and equality for the **people** involved in all parts of the circular value chain.

We need to know where we stand today to chart how to get to 100% Circularity by 2050. What circular activity is currently happening in the textiles and apparel industry, and where in the world is it happening? The WCTD Collection aims to answer this question by building the world’s largest digital library of circular textiles case studies.

Imagine a time when…products flow via optimal collection and distribution streams into reusable and repairable product platforms. People only consume what they need. Production and consumption wastes have been fully eliminated and multifunctional, season-less and timeless fashions are the norm, yet still fulfil our human need for expression and creativity without constraint. All business models, organisations, governments and citizens play a role in maintaining a healthy, functioning circular ecosystem.

The principles of a circular economy concern designing out waste, regenerating ecosystems and keeping items in use. Decoupling the economy from material flows—improving the rate of resource productivity faster than the economic growth rate—is also a consistent guide. By evolving with the growing number of applications of circular economy principles, and consolidating these strategies across thematic areas, Circle Economy’s Key Elements Framework (KE) renders the elements of the circular economy salient and serves as a basis to derive contextual strategies and interventions. 


The Framework consists of:
- Core Elements: Activities directly handling product or material flows; and uniquely,
- Enabling Elements: those that remove obstacles for core actors.

Urban Opportunities

It is 2050.  Full systems change has taken place. This wouldn’t have been possible without the immediate action and radical steps taken from 2020 onwards. Many targets had to be identified in the early 2020s and achieved by 2030 to ensure that the 2050 goal happened in full. A sense of urgency, turbo stakeholder collaboration, supportive government regulation and clear, data driven targets enabled the mindsets and systems change needed to transform to a fully circular textiles ecosystem.

A circular economics model underpins what we have created. It reflects and supports a living organism made up of makers, users and restorers, interacting across vibrant and interconnected networks. Checks and balances, alongside transparency and accountability, ensure a healthy system. Financial, environmental, and social metrics have the purpose of serving communities and the planet. There is shared ownership of profit and loss – across all three metrics – throughout the value chain.

     As a fashion company, we need to explore new circular ways of working and enable more sustainable consumption. Because even if consumption in the end is in the hands of the consumer, we need to create the conditions that makes it possible for fashion to be more circular and conscious choices to be easy. For example, using a garment for a long time is ultimately up to the consumer, but it depends on us offering products with great fit and quality. Choosing garments in recycled or sustainably sourced materials is in the hands of the consumer, but it is a choice that is far easier when we offer as much of our assortment as possible in recycled or sustainably sourced materials.  

In March, Lindex launches Re:Design – a collection of exclusive upcycled products that have been redesigned and remade locally in Borås, Sweden. The launch represents Lindex latest step in exploring new innovative more circular ways of working. The collection consists of six pieces within women’s wear. The pieces originate from Lindex Better Denim garments from previous seasons which have been redesigned and remade in Sweden. The original garments have been given new details or taken apart and put back together creating whole new products.
We are so excited to launch our Re:Design collection! For this collection, we have looked at each original garment’s possibilities and explored new circular ways of working to use less resources and prolong the garments lifetime. Prolonging the life of great garments by redesigning them into new amazing pieces is really one more step towards a more sustainable and resource efficient way to produce great fashion! says Sara Winroth, Sustainability Manager at Lindex.
Re:Design is a pilot that Lindex has done in collaboration with Re:textile at The Swedish School of Textiles in Borås. Re:Textile is an organisation that develops design and business models for redesign and circularity in the textile industry.
“Our goal at Re:textile is to contribute to decreased consumption of resources through new design processes and business models and we are very happy to have done this project together with Lindex. Working with Lindex as a partner, with their strong fashion and broad target group, helps us to take redesign from nisch to a larger market which can really make a difference” says Adrian Zethraeus, Project Manager at Re:Textile.
Lindex Re:Design collection is a limited edition and will be available from March 16 at lindex.com and in two Swedish stores; Nordstan Gothenburg and Sergelgatan Stockholm.

This collection features a selection of inspiring examples of the circular economy, compiled in the context of the Switch to Circular Economy Value Chains programme (SWITCH).

Raw materials are renewable, recyclable and safe, kept in continual circulation.

DETAIL:
Imagine a time when…the raw materials that are used to make things are sourced from existing products and regenerative agriculture, via carbon negative and climate neutral processes. Biodegradable raw materials are used for products with biodegradable end routes. Toxic chemicals have been washed out of the global materials pool, disposed of safely and replaced with beneficial alternatives. Virgin fibres made from fossil fuels have been banned, while secondary synthetic fibres, derived from what was already in the system, are kept in constant circulation as a resource. Circularity accounting methods, built on science-based metrics, help to manage a balanced system of resources, across all industries, and in line with the planet’s environmental limits.

Raw Materials and Planetary Boundaries

As part of the fashion company’s circular transformation and sustainability promise to make a difference for future generations, Lindex launches second hand. By piloting a new circular business model, Lindex takes an important step in prolonging the lifetime of clothes together with its customers.‘The climate will not wait and one of the most important things we need to do for our future is to save natural resources by prolonging the lifetime of products. Today, a lot of clothes spend the majority of its lifetime hanging in a closet without being used. At Lindex, we want to encourage and make it easier for our customers to be part of the change. With our second hand, we can give our customers both the possibility to hand in clothes that are not being used anymore and the opportunity to buy preloved pieces. It is a circular business model that prolongs the lifetime of our clothes and sharpens our total offer to meet our customers’ needs, today and tomorrow. A win-win for our customer and for the climate’, says Anna-Karin Dahlberg, Head of Sustainability at Lindex. In the pilot, Lindex has launched a take-back program for its baby and kids outerwear where customers can send in pieces and receive a reward. The collected pieces will then be sold in a few selected Lindex stores in Sweden. Lindex’s aim has been to create a simple, playful and accessible concept and the pilot has been developed as part of the Switching Gear Project with Circle Economy. Lindex also explores a new circular approach connected to its existing in-store textile collection. In collaboration with the local partner in Norway, selected womenswear pieces that has been handed in by customers will be sold in the newest Lindex store in Oslo Byporten. The curated second hand will feature long time favourites from the Lindex collections and design collaborations.In addition to offering the customers new types of services, the pilot gives Lindex valuable insights on how to scale the business model and how to improve in designing the assortment for longevity.Exploring circular business models is an important part of Lindex’ circular transformation and reaching its goal on climate – to reduce the CO2 emissions in its entire value chain with 50 per cent by 2030. 

Before rolling out their pilot, Lindex launched a prototype for the take-back programme and resale of baby and kids’ outerwear. They reached out to customers who had purchased baby or kids’ outerwear in the last three years to offer them the opportunity to return the outerwear they no longer used to two stores in Gothenburg or online in exchange for a fixed value gift card of 10-20% of the original resale price of the returned garment. To be able to also test their resale model, Lindex only collected high quality outerwear which could later be resold in selected stores. Their second hand offer was sold out within a few days, proving the customers’ interest in such an offer.Hurdles and lessons learntOne of the key hurdles that Lindex encountered whilst prototyping their circular business model was the low volumes of product collected via the take-back scheme. A low participation in take-back made them realise that they needed to dive deeper with their customers in order to understand the reasons for this and that offering and offering a customer friendly garment collection will be crucial to success.By sending out a follow-up survey, they learned that well-timed collection moments—in line with customer behaviour (for example, ‘spring cleaning’) are crucial, as the main reason for low participation in the take-back programme was a lack of garments to hand in by the time collection had started.On the other hand, the prototyping also gave them a positive early indication of potential of the resale itself. Lindex was positively surprised about the quality of the products coming back and the demand for secondhand, with collections quickly selling out in stores. This helped them to realise that timing and pricing of second hand goods in relation to their first hand sales is very important to the overall success of the model and that they must carefully align the two. Meanwhile, the circular innovation process itself opened the Lindex team’s eyes to the value of design thinking in aligning cross-functional teams and driving creative ideation. They hope to apply the same methodology when innovating on other parts of the business or product lines.What’s next?Lindex will kick off their pilot with their take back programme in Q2 2021. Since their target product will be baby and kids’ outerwear, the timing for the resale launch is important. The goal is to supply at least five stores in Sweden that will offer their resale range in Q3/Q4 2021. Depending on the success of the model, new product categories might be added at a later stage. Lindex is not afraid of cannibalisation: in the long run they hope to turn their pilot into a scalable and profitable business model that will integrate in their existing business, making the circular business model the new normal.

Lindex takes the next step in its transformation to a more sustainable and circular business and opens a pop-up store today with secondhand baby clothes. The store is part of Lindex's ongoing work to test and explore new circular business models to prolong the lifetime of clothes together with its customers. ‘Testing new business models is a natural part of Lindex's way of working and we see that secondhand is playing an increasingly significant role in our business. Our pilot so far, where we offer customers to send in outgrown kidswear and baby garments and where the garments are then offered as part in selected stores, has been a successful concept and well-received by our customers. We see a great demand for secondhand among our customers and are therefore happy to be able to sharpen our offer and meet the customer in new ways. Our new pop-up store with secondhand baby clothes will give us valuable insights into how the business model can be scaled up and developed to meet our customers’ needs’ says Caroline Öhgren, Director of Sales at Lindex. A central part of Lindex's sustainability promise - to make a difference for future generations - is the circular transformation that is an important part of meeting today’s challenges for the climate and lack of natural resources. One of the fashion company’s goals is that the entire assortment will be designed for longevity and/or circularity by 2025. ‘At Lindex, we are in a transformation to a more circular business, where each garment lives longer and we create value and more sustainable growth, while at the same time reducing our impact on the climate and natural resources. With new services and circular business models, we want to make it easier for our customers to make more sustainable choices and broaden our offer. By offering our customers secondhand, they get both the opportunity to hand in clothes that are no longer used and to buy preloved pieces. This way, we can together prolong the lifetime of garments. At Lindex, we also gain valuable insights on how we can develop our products for longevity’ says Annette Tenstam, Strategy Lead Circularity & Environmental Sustainability at Lindex. The pop-up store opens today, 19 May, in the shopping centre Nordstan in Gothenburg, and will be open until the end of June. The store offers an assortment of baby garments from Lindex's take-back program where customers can send in garments, which the fashion company launched in 2021.
