Incorporate digital technology

Buildings are where we live, work and play, and also where we store machinery and goods for later consumption. Buildings are but one component of the greater built environment which includes urban infrastructure such as roads, bridges and utilities. 
Current construction techniques have buildings consuming the bulk of materials globally. With increasing urbanisation and therefore demand for buildings of every kind, we drastically need to re-imagine how we design, utilise and decommission buildings.

BUILDINGS

Waste is often the entry point for discussing a circular economy. However, in a fully circular economy, waste does not exist as it has  been designed out of the system from the outset, either through avoidance (reduction of materials) or because outputs are such that they can be re-used as inputs into other production and consumption processes. Studying existing waste streams allows us to trace the problem back to its source and design an appropriate intervention. 

WASTE

A circular water economy reduces water consumption, reuses and recycles water and wastewater, and recovers materials, including heat and minerals, from water and wastewater to not only mitigate greenhouse gas emissions but also enhance resilience to climate change. A circular water economy preserves the health of water ecosystems using context specific approaches. 



WATER

The organics opportunity space refers to biological systems, organic products and materials, and the processes that relate to conserving and circulating organic materials at all stages of the value chain. Organics form part of the biocycle (as opposed to the technical cycle which includes metals and other non biodegradable materials) and requires different solutions to preserve nutrients at their highest value for re-entry back into the system. 


ORGANICS

The Value Chain opportunity space covers the activities of businesses across the whole value chain in the creation of a circular city that aids circular consumption. Municipalities create enabling conditions for businesses to offer circular products and services, and can become familiar with the range of solutions available to businesses that will encourage circular consumption and production in their locale. 

VALUE CHAINS

Regenerate strategies phase out hazardous or toxic materials and processes and substitute them with regenerative biomass resources. A circular economy aims to mimic natural cycles—by shifting to more regenerative farming practices, for example—while also maximising the share of circular biomass that enters the economy. Regeneration can happen both at the systems level (by designing regenerative processes) as well as at the product level (by switching synthetic to organic fertilisers, for example).

Regenerate

Cycle strategies aim to cycle and reuse materials at their highest value: they maximise the volume of secondary materials re-entering the economy, ultimately minimising the need for virgin material inputs and therefore also narrowing flows. Of course, virgin materials will always be needed to a degree: all materials degrade and can’t be cycled infinitely, use energy, and require blending with virgin materials to maintain strength and functionality.

The principles of a circular economy concern designing out waste, regenerating ecosystems and keeping items in use. Decoupling the economy from material flows—improving the rate of resource productivity faster than the economic growth rate—is also a consistent guide. By evolving with the growing number of applications of circular economy principles, and consolidating these strategies across thematic areas, Circle Economy’s Key Elements Framework (KE) renders the elements of the circular economy salient and serves as a basis to derive contextual strategies and interventions. 


The Framework consists of:
- Core Elements: Activities directly handling product or material flows; and uniquely,
- Enabling Elements: those that remove obstacles for core actors.

Based on the work of [Bocken et al. (2016)](https://www.researchgate.net/publication/309699661_Product_design_and_business_model_strategies_for_a_circular_economy), the Four Flows Framework serves as a simple framework for managing resource flows in a circular economy by using less (Narrow), using for longer (Slow), using again (Cycle), and using clean, regenerative materials and energy (Regenerate).

These different principles of circular economy can be applied to our socioeconomic metabolism: we can design stocks like buildings, infrastructure, machinery, and vehicles to be rich resource mines for the future, and design manufactured goods and consumables to be cycled and made regenerative. Furthermore, the focus must also centre on getting more value out of fewer materials. Achieving the aims of a circular economy—minimising material use, regenerating the Earth, and preventing material losses—can be done through these four key strategies mentioned above.

                           La economía circular requiere un cambio de modelo cultural, productivo y de consumo, y por ello, la consecución de este objetivo sólo es posible a través de la colaboración, participación, implicación y compromiso de toda la sociedad aragonesa: Administraciones públicas, empresas, agentes sociales, consumidores y ciudadanía en general.
Por ello trabajar de forma planificada y coordinada con transparencia, facilitando la participación, promoviendo el compromiso de los actores económicos y sociales, fomentando la colaboración público-privada y la coordinación interdepartamental e interinstitucional es indispensable para responder a los retos económicos, tecnológicos, ambientales, sociales y territoriales que se plantean en una transición necesaria y urgente hacia un nuevo modelo eco-nómico circular.
En este contexto, el Gobierno de Aragón desde los departamentos de Economía, Planificación y Empleo, y Agricultura, Ganadería y Medio Ambiente impulsan esta Declaración por la Economía Circular en Aragón, con el objeto de que, desde el compromiso y la corresponsabilidad, los principales agentes económicos y sociales de Aragón y el propio gobierno impulsen la transición hacia este nuevo modelo.                        Contribuir a la consecución de los objetivos establecidos en el Plan de Acción por la Economía Circular en Europa alineada con la Estrategia Europea de Crecimien-to 2020 y la Hoja de Ruta hacia una Europa Eficiente en el uso de los recursos.                Trabajar de forma individual y colectiva en promover un desarrollo socioeconómi-co de Aragón ecoeficiente en el uso de los recursos materiales y energéticos, disminuyendo el uso de los no renovables, contribuyendo a cerrar el círculo de los flujos de materiales y reducción de emisiones, garantizando la salud de los arago-neses y la protección de nuestro medio ambiente.                Informar y concienciar en el avance del modelo lineal al circular en nuestro ámbito de influencia empresarial, laboral, educativo o personal.                Fomentar la innovación en el ecodiseño en los productos, sus envases y los sis-temas productivos, garantizando su eficiencia en el uso de energía y materiales, e incrementando su reutilización y reciclabilidad.                Identificar y potenciar nuevos nichos económicos derivados de la economía circu-lar impulsando la I+D+i y creando entornos tecnológicos avanzados que potencien nuevas iniciativas y proyectos empresariales competitivos.                Contribuir a la lucha contra la despoblación y al desarrollo sostenible del territorio, fomentando la implantación de iniciativas productivas innovadoras que permitan localmente cerrar el círculo de los flujos de materiales, energía y servicios de las iniciativas industriales existentes o de nueva implantación.                Fomentar actividades empresariales que potencien el mantenimiento preventivo, la reparación y el mercado de segundo mano, incluyendo actividades del ámbito de la economía social, así como fomentar su utilización.                Disminuir los impactos derivados del uso de recursos respetando y priorizando la jerarquía europea, primando en las actividades productivas por este orden: la pre-vención en la generación, la reutilización, reciclado y valorización de los residuos como nuevos recursos materiales y energéticos.                Contribuir al reciclado y puesta en valor de los residuos mediante la segregación de los residuos en el ámbito doméstico, empresarial e institucional, incrementando el número de fracciones y su gestión mediante los contenedores, puntos limpios y gestores específicos.                 Fomentar y efectuar un modelo de consumo responsable, basado en una infor-mación clara, comprensible y legible mediante etiquetas y otras herramientas de información, que permitan conocer y elegir los productos de consumo contribu-yendo a fomentar su circularidad.                Definir y diseñar proyectos formativos innovadores que incrementen la disponibili-dad de nuevos profesionales especializados en este nuevo entorno económico, así como apoyar la creación de puestos de trabajo específicos de calidad, así como oportunidades para la integración y la cohesión social.                Definir y diseñar proyectos formativos innovadores para formar a los trabajadores de las empresas mediante la formación continua, tanto específica como horizon-tal, así como a la población en general, adaptados a sus características y necesi-dades.                Contribuir a la mitigación de las emisiones mediante la aplicación de buenas prác-ticas en el consumo energético en climatización de los edificios, en el uso y la ad-quisición de bienes y productos cada vez más eficientes, y contribuyendo a una movilidad más sostenible.                Facilitar y establecer cauces de información adecuados y transparentes para el in-tercambio de la misma entre empresas, administraciones, agentes de innovación, entidades de investigación, consumidores y agentes sociales.                Incluir contenidos educativos sobre economía circular en los distintos niveles de escolarización.                Definir y consensuar indicadores comunes, transparentes y accesibles que permi-tan conocer el grado de implantación de la economía circular en los diferentes ámbitos de actuación, así como el impacto social y en el territorio.

The Danish Ministry of Environment and Food, in collaboration with the Danish Ministry of Industry, Business and Financial Affairs published its Strategy for Circular Economy in 2018, based upon recommendations by an advisory board. The strategy’s implementation will occur over a four year period, until 2022. The thematic focus spans six areas: strengthening enterprise and business as a key driver of the circular transition, supporting the circular transition through data and digitalisation, promoting circular design, changing consumption patterns among the public, improving waste management and creating a proper market for waste/recycled materials, and increasing the value of buildings and biomass. The document also highlights the economic benefits enterprises will enjoy from the adoption of circular principles, as well as the targeted environmental benefits.

This collection has been built by a community of passionate researchers, students, and industry professionals as part of <a href="https://worldcirculartextilesday.com/" target="_blank">World Circular Textiles Day</a> (WCTD). 


World Circular Textiles Day takes place every year on 8th October. Our vision is to galvanise the collective ambitions and goals of people, organisations and businesses to reach a fully circular textiles world by 2050. Our mission is to provide a framework for circularity stakeholders to develop and deliver a collaborative, evolving roadmap and to chart circularity’s momentum annually from the 8th of October until 2050.

What does fully circular by 2050 mean?
- Shared textile resources, in the form of products and raw materials, are kept in **continual circulation**.
- Virgin resources are **replaced with circular materials**.
- Dignity, equity, and equality for the **people** involved in all parts of the circular value chain.

We need to know where we stand today to chart how to get to 100% Circularity by 2050. What circular activity is currently happening in the textiles and apparel industry, and where in the world is it happening? The WCTD Collection aims to answer this question by building the world’s largest digital library of circular textiles case studies.

Products and services are designed for multiple use and material value retention, with maximum positive impact.

Imagine a time when…products flow via optimal collection and distribution streams into reusable and repairable product platforms. Reuse and access models are dominant, and products are designed for multiple recirculation before biodegrading (if designed to do so), or being broken down into reusable raw materials for production. People only consume what they need. Production and consumption wastes have been fully eliminated and multifunctional, season-less and timeless fashions are the norm, yet still fulfil our human need for expression and creativity without constraint. All business models, organisations, governments and citizens play a role in maintaining a healthy, functioning circular ecosystem.

A framework of policy instruments that enable and stimulate the transition to the circular economy

It is 2050.  Full systems change has taken place. This wouldn’t have been possible without the immediate action and radical steps taken from 2020 onwards. Many targets had to be identified in the early 2020s and achieved by 2030 to ensure that the 2050 goal happened in full. A sense of urgency, turbo stakeholder collaboration, supportive government regulation and clear, data driven targets enabled the mindsets and systems change needed to transform to a fully circular textiles ecosystem.

A circular economics model underpins what we have created. It reflects and supports a living organism made up of makers, users and restorers, interacting across vibrant and interconnected networks. Checks and balances, alongside transparency and accountability, ensure a healthy system. Financial, environmental, and social metrics have the purpose of serving communities and the planet. There is shared ownership of profit and loss – across all three metrics – throughout the value chain.

                Mode- og tekstilbranchen samarbejder om cirkulær omstilling  
   
           Miljøministeren og mode-og tekstilbranchen har lanceret et samarbejde, der arbejder henimod en række fælles cirkulære målsætninger i 2030. Alle virksomheder i Mode- og tekstilbranchen inviteres til at deltage i samarbejdet. 
Miljøminister, Lea Wermelin, offentliggjorde mandag den 8. august starten på et sektorsamarbejde mellem ministeriet, 10 virksomheder og tre organisationer med ambitioner om at engagere en større del af den danske mode- og tekstilbranche. 
Kom på forkant med fremtidens krav:
Der stilles stadig flere krav til tøj- og tekstilprodukter, og fremtidens lovgivning placerer ansvaret for cirkulært design og materialer hos producenterne. Nu er der mulighed for at være på forkant med de krav, der forventes at komme, samt blive klogere på tekstildagsordenen. Gennem sektorsamarbejdet kan alle danske virksomheder deltage i vidensdeling og erfaringsudveksling og dermed sikre fælles fremdrift og handling. 
Mål baseret på cirkulære principper:
Samarbejdet tager udgangspunkt i tre mål, der er funderet på internationale principper om cirkulær økonomi:  

Inden 2030 består alt tøj og tekstil fra danske virksomheder af mindst 40 pct. genanvendt materiale, herunder mindst 10 pct. genanvendt direkte fra tekstilfibre. (Brugen af genanvendt materiale skal ske inden for rammerne af EU’s tekstilstrategi, herunder særligt med hensyn til fødevaregodkendt PET-plast. Og det udregnes som et gennemsnit for hver virksomhed.) 
At skabe fælles cirkulære designkrav med henblik på at tøj fra danske virksomheder designes til at have flere liv og indgå i optimale cirkulære kredsløb. Designkravene skal være anvendelige for både små og store virksomheder.  
En større del af omsætningen på tøj i Danmark kommer fra gensalg, og tøj holdes i brug så længe som muligt.  

Styregruppe og sekretariat:  
Der er udpeget en styregruppe med bred repræsentation fra den danske mode- og tekstilbranche. Som første skridt i sektorsamarbejdet nedsættes der en række arbejdsgrupper, som skal være med til at definere målene mere præcist, udveksle løsninger inden for genanvendte materialer, fælles designprincipper, og bidrage til udbredelsen af genbrugsløsninger og cirkulære forretningsmodeller.  
For at sikre fremdrift i arbejdet og inddragelse af aktørerne på området, er der oprettet et sekretariat for sektorsamarbejdet hos Lifestyle & Design Cluster. Sekretariatet skal arbejde for at få flest mulige aktører i mode- og tekstilbranchen til at tage del i den cirkulære omstilling.

Der nedsættes arbejdsgrupper af styregruppen som skal understøtte sektorsamarbejdets udpegede initiativer. Alle deltagne virksomheder kan deltage i én eller flere arbejdsgrupper
Arbejdsgrupperne udarbejder delmål og indstiller disse til styregruppen.
Styregruppen sætter nye initiativer i gang, som støtter op om at nå de overordnede mål for sektorsamarbejdet.
  
   Sektorsamarbejdet har en styregruppe, der er nedsat af Miljøministeriet. Lifestyle & Design Cluster er sekretariat for samarbejdet.
Styregruppen består af virksomheder i mode- og tekstilbranchen og udgør samlet over halvdelen af den danske omsætning i branchen.

Tvivlsomt med en målsætning på 40 procent genanvendt materiale i 2030, lyder det fra forsker.Tirsdag begynder modeugen i København, og der er igen igen fokus på bæredygtighed. (© ALESSANDRO GAROFALO)Når modellerne går ned ad catwalken til årets Copenhagen Fashion Week fra i morgen, bliver det endnu engang med fokus på bæredygtighed.Den danske mode og tekstilbranche skal nemlig være grønnere, og derfor har ti danske virksomheder netop forpligtet sig til, at de vil genbruge mere og flere anvendte materialer frem mod 2030.Aftalen er lavet i samarbejde med Miljøstyrelsen samt tre brancheforeninger, og blandt virksomhederne er kendte tøjfirmaer som Bestseller og Ganni.Recycling og målsætningen om 40 procent er tvivlsomt, fordi det er meget svært at genanvende tekstilfibre i forhold til for eksempel plastik.Else Skjold, lektor og Ph.d. i design og bæredygtighedMålene lyder blandt andet, at al tøj og tekstil fra virksomhederne skal bestå af mindst 40 procent genanvendt materiale inden 2030. At tøjet skal designes til at have flere liv, og at en større del af omsætningen på tøj i Danmark skal komme fra genbrug.Else Skjold, der er lektor og Ph.d. i design og bæredygtighed ved Det Kongelige Akademi, kalder årets samarbejdet ambitiøst, men det er det også nødt til at være.Den danske tekstilbranche skal være grønnere. Derfor er Miljøstyrelsen, ti danske tøj- og tekstilvirksomheder og tre organisationer gået sammen om at forpligte sig til at genbruge mere og bruge flere genanvendte materialer frem mod 2030.Samarbejdet består af: AIAYU, Bestseller, DK-Company, Salling Group, Ganni, JYSK, Dansk Wilton, Mammut Hoffmann, Trendsales, Green Cotton, Dansk Mode & Textil, Wear/Dansk Erhverv, Lifestyle & Design Cluster og Miljøstyrelsen.Alle danske tekstilvirksomheder kan tilslutte sig målene og sektorsamarbejdet.I EU er tekstiler på en fjerdeplads over produktgrupper med størst negativt aftryk på både miljø og klima.Sektorsamarbejdet udvides til at inkludere Norge, Sverige og Finland fra 2023.Kilde: Miljøministeriet.Ifølge Else Skjold er det de rigtige målsætninger, der er valgt som fokus i samarbejdet. Men hun er dog skeptisk over, om det er realistisk at nå målet om at genanvende 40 procent materiale inden 2030. Tvivlen ligger blandt andet hos teknologien.- Recycling og målsætningen om 40 procent er tvivlsomt, fordi det er meget svært at genanvende tekstilfibre i forhold til for eksempel plastik.- Så vi mangler teknologi, og det er meget dyrt at udvikle.Her kan du høre, hvad Else Skjold, lektor og Ph.d. i design og bæredygtighed ved Det Kongelige Akademi, mener om målsætningen:Ifølge Else Skjold er der fare for, at vi ender med at investere for meget i store industrianlæg, som ikke vil have nok tekstilaffald til, at det giver mening.I 2021 var temaet for modeugerne også bæredygtighed, mens man i 2020 lancerede en række "bæredygtighedskrav", der skal opfyldes, før man må være en del af de mange shows i København.Det vigtigste ved dette års samarbejde er, at branchen bliver samlet og får gjort noget ved, at tekstilbranchen globalt set er en af de helt store klimasyndere.Sådan lyder det fra Maria Glæsel, der er direktør i modevirksomheden AIAYU og forperson for sektorsamarbejdet.- Der er et kæmpe behov for teknologisk udvikling og innovation. Det kommer netop, fordi vi i sektorsamarbejdet går sammen så mange virksomheder og derigennem kan lægge et meget større pres og en øget efterspørgsel, siger Maria Glæsel.Her kan du høre, hvad Maria Glæsel, forperson for sektorsamarbejdet, siger om aftalen:Hun er enig med Else Skjold i, at hvis målsætningen med de 40 procent skulle efterleves i dag, vil det ikke kunne lade sig gøre. Men:- Pointen er netop, at vi skal arbejde for, at det kommer til at ske.Hun påpeger, at det især er gennem den teknologiske udvikling, at de skal opnå målsætningen på de 40 procent.Bare lade vær med at købe alt muligt skrald, som vi aldrig nogensinde får på.Else Skjold, lektor og Ph.d. i design og bæredygtighedDet, som virkelig batter fra virksomhedernes side, er de to andre punkter, som man har valgt i samarbejdet.- Det ene er design. Det er rigtig fornuftigt, fordi der er rigtig meget fejlproduktion og utrolig kort brugsfaser, siger Else Skjold.- Det er også rigtig fornuftigt at se på de cirkulære forretningsmodeller, fordi det kommer før eller siden, og det ved aktørerne.Når vi snakker cirkulær økonomi, handler det om at holde materialer i kredsløb længst muligt.Og så er der også forbrugere som i den grad skal mere på banen, fortæller hun. Vi skal være mere kræsne, når vi køber tøj, og gøre brug af genbrug og tøjservices.- Vi skal bruge de her services, gå til justeringsskrædder få repareret tøj, der går i stykker, købe noget mere genbrug. Og bare lade vær med at købe alt muligt skrald, som vi aldrig nogensinde får på, afslutter Else Skjold.

Lifestyle and Design Cluster

The pressure on textile manufacturers to align with climate goals is increasing. New legislation will push for more circular design and materials. To prepare for these new demands, the Ministry of Environment of Denmark and the Lifestyle and Design Center initiated a sectoral collaboration. Ten companies have joined this initiative already and all companies in Denmark are invited to join. They set ambitious objectives in terms of recycled material percentages, the creation of circular design requirements and the extension of textiles life.&nbsp;

Imagine a time when…the raw materials that are used to make things are sourced from existing products and regenerative agriculture, via carbon negative and climate neutral processes. Biodegradable raw materials are used for products with biodegradable end routes. Toxic chemicals have been washed out of the global materials pool, disposed of safely and replaced with beneficial alternatives. Virgin fibres made from fossil fuels have been banned, while secondary synthetic fibres, derived from what was already in the system, are kept in constant circulation as a resource. Circularity accounting methods, built on science-based metrics, help to manage a balanced system of resources, across all industries, and in line with the planet’s environmental limits.

Imagine a time when…people and communities are at the heart of any sustainable and circular system. The planet thrives, enabling us to survive with balance and abundance. The ‘makers’ who design, build, reprocess and recirculate products throughout the value chain are treated equally and are equitable partners in shaping and benefitting from the system. Textiles/garments can be produced and repurposed locally as well as centrally. A blend of craft methods alongside more automated production provides regionalised, multi-faceted perspectives and fulfilling livelihoods, be they high- or low-tech. Wealth gaps are minimised and dignity, equity, equality is a reality for all.
