This report explores approaches to the collection and treatment of textile waste within 6 EU countries, to inform the development of separate textile collection schema in Denmark by 2025. Evaluations of each approach highlight the success and challenges faced by the framework.

Problem

The main challenges facing the separate collection of textiles may include low economic value in non-reusable textiles, delineating between non and reusable textiles; assigning responsibility for collection; protecting current collection partners, and technological challenges.

Solution

Recommend policy which spans design, recirculation, and consumer education. Advocates for the registration of textile collection data and continuous monitoring of second-hand textiles to better inform the development of policy, initiatives and goal setting for separate textile collection.

Outcome

The outcome is developing as Danish Policy on separate textile collections evolves. This report has sparked research on the monitoring and data collection of market composition, textile waste streams, and the second-hand textile market.
