Tourism is a very important sector in Uganda, and as the industry is experiencing a rapid growth over the years, potential threats of environmental degradation, larger waste levels and emissions also rise. To address the lack of expertise and skills for the development of sustainable and resource efficient operations, SWITCH Africa Green has initiated a project to train and advise industry stakeholders. Their results show that with better assistance and knowledge, the tourism industry can develop more sustainably.

Problem

Tourism is one of the fastest-growing service sectors in Uganda, according to the nation's Vision 2040, and is expected to play a significant role in the economy, with earnings expected to rise. The value of environmentally conscious and sustainable operations is becoming more urgent as the number of tourists visiting Uganda scales upwards. Technology, skills and services capable of implementing environmentally sustainable and resource conscious operations are currently scarce in the country.

Solution

The primary goal of the project was to help Uganda achieve sustainable tourism development by assisting in the transition to an inclusive green industry focused on sustainable consumption and production patterns, which generate growth, reduce poverty, and provide decent jobs for communities while reducing the tourism sector's environmental effect. The project aimed to map current sustainable tourism requirements, guidelines, and labels in order to discuss the potential of marketing incentives for the promotion of eco-tourism in Uganda in collaboration with the private sector. The SWITCH Africa Green program in Uganda's tourism sector benefited four businesses in the tourism sector and 270 farmers.

Outcome

As a result of this project, the firms participating have reported improved technical skills, performance, better resource efficiency and waste management along with the generation of more job opportunities for the locals.
