The Foodeez project, started in 2008, aims to offer solutions to manufacturers and distributors with excessive stock, and prevent dumping of food still fit for human consumption. Past reports have indicated that approximately 30% of food production goes to waste — food is either short-dated, reaches its best-by date without being consumed, is damaged or is the result of failed test production runs. Foodeez combats this by purchasing damaged items from the insurance industry, ultimately reselling the stock to independent retailers after debranding and repackaging. In this way, food that has been significantly short-dated is given a second chance, substantially reducing food waste. The business practice has been successfully implemented, demonstrating tangible benefits to manufacturers, distributors and retailers (who have a workable alternative to dumping stock) as well as consumers (who have increased access to affordable food). There has also been increased interest from the stakeholders usually responsible for dumping in decreasing the environmental impact of this operation.
