The South African municipality of Makana, in cooperation with Dutch financial group Nollen Group, has developed and constructed a biomass plant to burn invasive alien plant species that disrupt local agriculture. These species massively increase the water consumption of local farms and need to be removed. The new biomass plant uses these unwanted species to create energy for the municipality. Each year, it is expected to produce 3 MW of energy as well as improving the availability of water and the ability of locally native plants to survive thanks to the removal of water-consuming invasive species.
