The Democles (“Demo” for demolition and “Cles” for keys in French) project
aims at identifying the key factors to improve the recycling rate of finishing
work waste. Another important goal is that contractors comply with these
requirements through a set of different activities and documents that bring
sector new tools to undertake these objectives. Specific aspects of DEMOCLES
are: (1) Identifying the operational and economic difficulties related to on-
site sorting and the treatment solutions; (2) Defining a common and reliable
framework for on-site sorting of finishing work wastes to develop recycling at
a reasonable cost; (3) Formulating practical and operational recommendations
to be used by clients and C&D; companies for waste management; and (4)
Formulating some recommendations regarding the necessary training for on-site
sorting. The initiative involves 28 stakeholders of the entire value chain. A
steering committee is coordinating the project, four working groups are
working on specific issues and up to 10 demolition sites are object to case
studies in order to test and analyse some tracking tools as well as on-site
sorting practices and treatment solutions.
