The dumping of used cooking oil into drains and sewers causing grease clogs called fatbergs is becoming a widespread issue in Malaysia. FatHopes Energy was established in 2010 with the aim of collecting used cooking oil all over Malaysia to be refined and processed for export to Europe to produce cleaner fuel - biodiesel.
Cooking oils are widely used in Malaysia to prepare everything from fried chickens to roadside stalls selling banana fritters. However, most are not aware of the value of used cooking oil that they eventually dump them down the sink or illegally dump them into nearby drains causing grease clogs which are becoming a frequent occurrence.
The demand for used oil is rising in Europe due to the green energy targets for producing biodiesels which can be processed from used cooking oils. FatHopes Energy Sdn Bhd picks up used cooking oil from restaurants, well-known fast-food chains like KFC and McDonald’s and also hotels. They have developed smart The oil will be filtered to remove food scraps before being processed and then transferred into tankers for export to Europe.
FatHopes Energy has converted over 150 million KG of waste oil into biodiesel in five production plants across Malaysia since it started a decade ago. It has also abated 45 million kg carbon emission thanks to the cleaner fuel it produces.
