CJI has defined circular jobs as any occupation that directly involves or indirectly supports one of the strategies of the circular economy. It distinguishes between three types of circular jobs: core, enabling and indirectly circular jobs.

**Core circular jobs** are all jobs that ensure the closure of raw material cycles, including jobs in repair, renewable energy, waste and resource management. 

**‍Enabling circular jobs** are jobs that remove barriers for and enable the acceleration and upscaling of core circular activities, including jobs that arise in leasing, education, design and digital technology. 

**Indirectly circular jobs** are jobs that occur in other sectors that do not play a direct role in furthering the transition to the circular economy but can still adopt circular strategies. They include jobs that provide services to core circular strategies, including jobs in information services, logistics and the public sector.

The Knowledge Hub Collection includes examples of circular jobs, publications, reports, case studies and policies different organisations, governments and businesses are already using to advocate for a person-centred circular economy.

The principles of a circular economy concern designing out waste, regenerating ecosystems and keeping items in use. Decoupling the economy from material flows—improving the rate of resource productivity faster than the economic growth rate—is also a consistent guide. By evolving with the growing number of applications of circular economy principles, and consolidating these strategies across thematic areas, Circle Economy’s Key Elements Framework (KE) renders the elements of the circular economy salient and serves as a basis to derive contextual strategies and interventions. 


The Framework consists of:
- Core Elements: Activities directly handling product or material flows; and uniquely,
- Enabling Elements: those that remove obstacles for core actors.

Based on the work of [Bocken et al. (2016)](https://www.researchgate.net/publication/309699661_Product_design_and_business_model_strategies_for_a_circular_economy), the Four Flows Framework serves as a simple framework for managing resource flows in a circular economy by using less (Narrow), using for longer (Slow), using again (Cycle), and using clean, regenerative materials and energy (Regenerate).

These different principles of circular economy can be applied to our socioeconomic metabolism: we can design stocks like buildings, infrastructure, machinery, and vehicles to be rich resource mines for the future, and design manufactured goods and consumables to be cycled and made regenerative. Furthermore, the focus must also centre on getting more value out of fewer materials. Achieving the aims of a circular economy—minimising material use, regenerating the Earth, and preventing material losses—can be done through these four key strategies mentioned above.

               Growing demand for healthcare from an expanding population, overconsumption of resources, waste, pollution, climate – all these factors are putting unsustainable pressure on our ecosystems. On the upside, a number of global trends – e.g. the shift to value-based care, changing consumption patterns and the adoption of digital technology – are supporting the (essential) transition to a circular economy.                   In a circular economy, products, parts and materials are kept at their highest utility and value at all times, circulating between customers. Addressing this customer need, we offer a wide variety of circular propositions:  Periodic, usage- and outcome-based business models Refurbishment and parts recovery On-site or remote circular services, including upgrades Recycled materials Software    Performance- and access-based models allow our customers to access products as a service. Our Lumify portable ultrasound service is a good example. Under this flexible subscription service, users can have access to transducers, an app and online ecosystem. The subscription service reduces upfront costs and improves patient access to innovative care.   Refurbishment and parts recovery offers our customers a choice of pre-owned systems that have been thoroughly refurbished, upgraded and quality-tested. The Philips Diamond Select program makes first-rate equipment available at lower cost, offering high-quality refurbished systems with a full Philips warranty. In this way, customers can benefit from state-of-the art technology at a more affordable price.   On-site or remote upgrades where key components are upgraded so that the system is like new: SmartPath is an economical way to enhance existing Philips systems to current technology or increased capacities. It also enables Philips to re-use vital components, driving circular economy value creation.                           From landfill to recycling and re-use from packaging to training, we know that recycling is key to sustainability. By recycling waste from the production process, our operation in Seattle is helping to fuel a circular economy and a more energy-efficient tomorrow.                   We collaborate closely with our customers, like-minded front-runners, (non-) governmental organizations, and other stakeholders, such as the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, to drive the adoption of circular thinking. At the 2018 World Economic Forum, Philips announced the commitment to take back and repurpose all large medical systems that our customers are prepared to return to us. We are actively pursuing the trade-in of equipment such as MRI, CT and interventional X-ray systems and taking full control to ensure that all traded-in materials are repurposed in a responsible way. The mission is to convene a coalition of like-minded organizations to make similar capital equipment pledges. A growing group of industry leaders – including ASML, Cisco, Dell, HP, KPN, Mitsubishi Elevators and Vanderlande – are starting to take full responsibility for the reuse, refurbishment and recycling of the capital equipment they sell. Philips Healthcare's Diamond Select programme offers a range of remanufactured equipment to the healthcare sector. Three remanufacturing plants are now operational with one of these is located in Best, the Netherlands. This site refurbishes X-Ray, MR and CT equipment with the other two are located in the USA. The products, once refurbished, are sold back into the market with full warranty, at a reduced price, and with a Circular Equipment tag. Remanufactured systems offer many advantages. They are sold at 60 to 85% of the price with quality assurance and guarantees meeting those of new products. This enables healthcare operators to improve, diversify and differentiate their services cost-effectively in competitive markets. For Philips, remanufacturing opens new sales and lease markets and an opportunity to save up to half of the costs on the upgrade bill of materials. Remanufacturing also grants environmental benefits linked to resource- efficiency, as up to 80% of materials are reused in the process. Finally, since its start in 1990 Philips’ program has become core to the company's business strategy and spurred the creation of jobs with a strong status within the company, due to its role in providing both revenue and impacting the company’s circularity ambitions.

In 2019, Philips developed and deployed tailored circular economy training for all its product architects. This is the first of a series of planned functional-specific trainings that translate circular economy principles to the specific Philips reality of functional experts. The target audience consisted of approximately 500 individuals, distributed across sites globally and across very diverse business units ranging from electric toothbrushes to large medical scanners. The training was developed in-house as classroom training with two main objectives:1) create awareness and a shared language of circular design options relevant for Philips2) start defining granular, business-unit-specific design criteria. After successful planning and alignment amongst the various business unit leaders and innovation managers, the training sessions were held across the globe in the second half of 2019. Architects are now translating the new knowledge into business-unit and product-specific design criteria that will be implemented into the respective quality management systems.

At 2.4%, Norway's circularity rate is below the global average (8.6%). Norway consumes 235 million tonnes of materials—metals, fossil fuels, biomass, and minerals—to fuel its societal needs each year. 97.6% of these materials are never cycled back into the economy. But Norway has enormous potential: the country could see a 20-fold increase in its circularity by restructuring Norwegian business and industry.

The service tag is an identification system based on QR codes that makes each luminaire uniquely identifiable and provides information about maintenance, installation and spare parts. By scanning the QR codes on all next-generation luminaires, masts and packaging, you can easily access product configuration information, saving valuable time and avoiding errors.

These countries are home to around a quarter of the global population, yet consume over one-third (34%) of raw materials. Shift countries’ material footprint per capita is 4.6 times that of Build countries (largely due to the overconsumption of consumer goods imported from Grow counties) and 1.6 times that of Grow countries.

These are high-income countries in the Global North, as well as in the Gulf, Australia, and Oceania. Examples include:

While much of their infrastructure is already built, they still contribute heavily to the overshoot of planetary boundaries: they contribute 42% of climate change, 27% of nitrogen, 18% of phosphorus, 16% of freshwater use and 38% of land use change.

Shift

Slow strategies aim to keep materials in use for as long as possible, for example through design for durability and repairability. A more circular economy is also a slower one: materials, components, and products—and even buildings and infrastructure—that we lock in stocks are made to last. This will lower material demand in the long run, in essence also serving to narrow resource flows.

Slow

Whilst no two countries are the same, there are still obvious similarities between some of them, with discernible development patterns and parallels in evidence. Common problems and shared solutions help place unique country identities and individual issues in context.

Whilst this classification is far from clear-cut and exhibits some overlap, it does underline how the discourse on transitioning to a circular economy needs to account for both differences and commonalities, if we are to arrive at a more strategic and instructive analysis. It also allows to highlight a set of key themes that are likely to be central to the countries that fall under the respective profiles.

                            As of 2020, all Philips’ sites are 100%-powered by renewable electricity sources. Most of that comes from projects we helped create, such as the Los Mirasoles windpark in the US and the Krammer and Bouwdokken windfarms in the Netherlands. In Europe, Philips is securing renewable electricity supply through consortium-led power purchase agreements. To reach 100% renewable electricity usage globally, we purchase renewable electricity within the markets or via local utility companies. We are also committed to sourcing over 75% of our total energy consumption from renewable sources by 2025, gradually phasing out fossil fuels from our entire operations.                                                        Although reduction is key to carbon neutrality, unavoidable carbon emissions require offsetting in order to drive down our emissions to zero. In 2020, we compensated emissions equivalent to the annual uptake of approximately 16 million medium-sized oak trees. This covers all emissions from our sites, our business travel, and our logistics movements.   We offset our emissions by financing projects in emerging regions that have a strong link with health and well-being (SDG 3) and sustainable consumption (SDG 12). These projects also drive social, economic and additional environmental benefits for the communities in which they are rolled out.          Providing access to safe drinking water while reducing wood consumption These carbon-emission reduction projects will provide millions of liters of safe drinking water in Uganda and Ethiopia and will reduce the mortality risk from water-borne diseases. Additionally, less wood will be required for boiling water, leading to less indoor air pollution and slowing down the deforestation rate. To ensure quality, all offsets are verified under the Gold Standard. Fighting against respiratory diseases and deforestation by means of clean cookstoves By financing highly efficient cookstoves in Kenya and Uganda, less wood will be required for cooking, leading to lower carbon emissions, a reduction in diseases caused by indoor air pollution, and a lower deforestation rate in these regions. To ensure quality, all offsets are verified under the Gold Standard. Providing access to clean energy while improving health and education This project will reduce the demand-supply gap in the Dewas region of India and will provide renewable energy to more than 50,000 households. The project will also provide a mobile medical unit in 24 villages, giving diagnosis and medicines free of charge twice a month. Additional funding will be provided for educational programs and improved sanitation facilities in five local schools in order to maximize the social impact. To ensure quality, all offsets are verified under the Verified Carbon Standard.                                        Philips has set long-term CO2 emission targets approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The approval confirms that Philips’ targets across our value chain are in line to limit global warming to below 1.5 °C.  By joining forces with our customers and suppliers we can reduce our shared carbon footprint and create a sustainable and more resilient healthcare industry.  We aim to deliver on this target by collaborating with our customers and our suppliers to magnify our impact. Together with our customers and suppliers, we will continue to reduce our collective need for fossil fuels by using renewable and energy-efficient alternatives. In the coming years, we will act on the following objectives:          1: Minimizing our climate impact in our supply chain by adopting circular economy principles From a climate perspective, applying circular business models leads to a significant emission reduction in our supply chain. To address that demand, we are continuously reducing the climate impact of our products by increasing energy efficiency, increasing the use of recycled plastics and recyclable materials, and ensuring we make our packaging easier to recycle and re-use.  Read more 3: Collaborating with our suppliers to reduce emissions in our supply chain With growing global concerns about the impact of climate change, there is a pressing need for industry and business to manage and reduce CO2 emissions across the entire value chain – including at supplier level. To this end, we have invited many of our largest suppliers – first-tier manufacturing and transportation-related suppliers – to report their climate performance and strategy as part of the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) Supply Chain program. Earth day consistently serves as a reminder to reflect on the most impactful approaches to sustainability. This year is no exception given society’s recovery from a pandemic that has made us focus on building a better future, and an acceleration towards net-zero carbon commitments from businesses and communities worldwide. New strides are being made in the circular economy and how it applies to different sectors, including capital equipment – high-value products designed, built, and acquired to last. Ranging from MRI machines to wind turbines to data servers, the range of industries and products represented in the sector are as diverse as the sustainability opportunities surrounding it.
Circularity in capital equipment or heavy industry plays a crucial role in decarbonization efforts or the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to sustainable levels. While 6.5% of global emissions and over half the world’s ore production can be attributed directly to capital equipment itself, economically it contributes 13% of value added to the global economy, demonstrating a key circular economy principle of producing more value with less resources. Capital equipment manufacturers and users are building on this to realize the tremendous decarbonization and resource conservation opportunity for manufacturers and users of capital equipment.
The capital equipment sector is already taking important steps to advance decarbonization in heavy industry. To help accelerate this transformation, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation partnered with Philips and the Platform for Accelerating the Circular Economy (PACE) in February to launch the Capital Equipment Coalition North America. This Coalition collaboratively identifies challenges and opportunities, shares best practices, and develops solutions to drive change towards a circular economy for capital equipment.

Microsoft
At Microsoft, we see incredible economic and environmental benefits of taking a circular approach to materials management, which reduces waste and carbon emissions significantly. We’ve committed to change our operations, drive innovation, and invest in solutions that accelerate the transition to a circular economy.
We committed to reuse 90% of servers and components within our Cloud infrastructure by 2025. In 2020, we announced our first-of-its kind approach to repurpose and reuse Cloud hardware through Microsoft Circular Centers, which will be located on every new major datacenter campus. Using intelligent scheduling via Dynamics 365, these centers will process servers on-site through a variety of reuse routes working in close collaboration with key suppliers and partners.
Philips
At Philips, we collaborate closely with our customers, suppliers, peer groups, governmental and non-governmental organizations and other stakeholders to accelerate the adoption of “circular” thinking.
For example, we have reduced our operational carbon footprint by over 40% since 2007 and became carbon-neutral in our operations at the end of 2020. We are also closing the loop by trading in and repurposing large medical equipment such as MRI, CT and X-ray systems at the end of their use cycle and are extending these practices across all our medical products. By 2025, we want 25% of our revenue to come from circular products and services. 
GE Digital
Industrial data empowers companies to tackle tough problems such as decarbonization, energy transitions, and accelerating the circular economy. Looking at our systems in new ways, GE Digital has helped industrial organizations embrace lean manufacturing while also digitizing their operations. Some of the results include reducing furnace emissions by 80%, decreasing waste by 90%, cutting inventory storage space requirements by 80%, and improving energy usage by 15% year over year for $10 million in savings over five years. We have enabled our customers to monitor capital equipment operations and identify areas to reduce water and energy use; track materials, parts and products through value chains with virtual technology; and apply learning algorithms to redesign operations and reduce emissions. 
DLL
Leasing and financing options tailored to asset utilization and lifecycle can aid companies in transitioning to a more sustainable and responsible business model that embraces the circular economy. For example, DLL’s Life Cycle Asset Management (LCAM) program proactively aligns the repair and maintenance, refurbishment and remanufacturing skills of our manufacturing partners with the flexibility of recurring payments for the end-user customer. By keeping products, components or materials in a closed-loop supply chain as long as possible, raw material use, energy usage and emissions can all be significantly reduced.
To fully enable circular transition in the capital equipment sector, the entire ecosystem must work together – from procurement to financing to equipment maintenance. Our world is only 9% circular and the trend is negative. The circularity gap is not closing. This collection features a selection of case studies, based on the global *Circularity Gap Reports*, that can mitigate climate breakdown by reducing virgin material consumption, waste and greenhouse gas emissions. The latest **[Circularity Gap Report 2023](https://www.circularity-gap.world/2023#download)** reveals that the global economy is now only 7.2% circular and outlines how circular solutions across four sectors can bring global planetary boundaries back within safe limits. 

In the six years of the *Circularity Gap Report*, the global economy has extracted and used unprecedented amounts of materials. The first edition of the *Report *in 2018 found that global circularity was 9.1% and it has decreased every year since—leaving a Circularity Gap of over 90%. If this trend continues, we will have to find more and better solutions to combat the negative effects of climate change. This is why we have identified case studies from across the globe—based on the needs of society and planetary health—that serve as real-world examples of the circular economy in action.

Circle Economy is a not-for-profit organisation working to accelerate the circular transition. Through the *Circularity Gap Reporting Initiative*, our mission is to deliver an annual global Circularity Metric that measures the state of the world economy and identifies key levers to transition to global circularity. With an expanding, aging and, on average, more prosperous population, healthcare services are increasing globally. Buildings aside, typical resource groups include use of capital equipment such as X-ray machines, pharmaceuticals, hospital outfittings (beds), disposables and home care equipment.

The framework consists of 21 complementary interventions, across six scenarios - one for each of the six societal needs we model. These interventions can mitigate climate impact by curbing GHG emissions

These 21 interventions are spread across six societal needs and wants, with a set of solutions. Within these solutions are strategies on ’how to get there'.  

The framework moves beyond incremental action and provides solutions that will require behavioral change (dietary shifts towards less meat consumption, for example) and the adoption of state-of-the-art technologies in the industry to mitigate emissions in hard-to-abate sectors (such as steel manufacturing). It illustrates how continued globalisation can benefit from the uptake of digital solutions. The combined interventions showcase the mitigation potential that begins where the current country pledges end; illustrating the additional impact our interventions can bring to the NDCs. In short, the interventions provide input for a more profound fundamental transformation than the more current pathways that make up the vast majority of NDCs. 

Together, the combined interventions can almost double the current global Circularity Metric of 8.6%, bringing it to 17%. 

This results in:
• Shrinking global material use and extraction by 28%. 
• Cutting global GHG emissions by 39%—fully closing the Emissions Gap as defined in our report and taking into account the updated NDCs.
• Allowing the world to achieve the Paris Agreement’s goal of keeping at 1.5-degrees of warming by 2032.
