The New Millenium Experience Company (NMEC) was first formed on the initiative of the Millenium Commission in February 1997, and remained in activity until 2001. It was a public sector company with a single shareholder (initially the minister without portfolio). It was responsible for ensuring that the whole populace had the opportunity to celebrate the arrival of the third millenium. To do this, it sponsored a nationwide programme of events, activities and projects, which were centred on educational themes, with the aim of making learning an enjoyable activity for people of all ages. In addition to this national programme (for which it maintained a record of achievement), NMEC was responsible for the construction and much of the content of the Millenium Dome at Greenwich. The work of the company was funded from income generated by the National Lottery, and not by taxpayers.
