The Cities Collection is a repository of case studies that demonstrate the role of cities in the circular transition, and includes policies, business cases and research articles. Process waste and ensure its re-entry into industry at its highest value

The food system nourishes populations and employs 50% of the global workforce, but:
- it currently drives a quarter of the overshoot on the climate change planetary boundary due to its greenhouse gas (GHG) production, 
- animal farming alone uses over one-quarter of all land, equivalent to the size of the Americas,
- nearly a quarter of freshwater resources are lost due to rampant food waste, and
- it is the single largest driver of biodiversity loss.

A circular food system must address the whole value chain, from production to consumption to waste management. The four key solutions for the food system are:
- Put healthier, satiating foods first: Prioritise satiating and healthy foods with a lower environmental impact—ideally shifting calories from meat, fish, and dairy towards cereals, fruits, vegetables, and nuts.
- Go local, seasonal, and organic: Prioritise the production and consumption of local, seasonal, and organic produce (sometimes in combination with GMO to reduce pests and disease loss on crops), which can lead to a significantly reduced need for chemical inputs, fuels, and processing services that contribute to environmental impacts.
- Mainstream regenerative agriculture: Scale up agricultural practices that regenerate ecosystems, recirculate nutrients and sequester carbon by design. 
- End avoidable food waste: Minimise food loss and valorise waste following the food waste hierarchy along the supply chain and at the consumer level through better management of transport and storage, more refrigeration and smart planning, and technology at the consumer and food service levels.

The principles of a circular economy concern designing out waste, regenerating ecosystems and keeping items in use. Decoupling the economy from material flows—improving the rate of resource productivity faster than the economic growth rate—is also a consistent guide. By evolving with the growing number of applications of circular economy principles, and consolidating these strategies across thematic areas, Circle Economy’s Key Elements Framework (KE) renders the elements of the circular economy salient and serves as a basis to derive contextual strategies and interventions. 


The Framework consists of:
- Core Elements: Activities directly handling product or material flows; and uniquely,
- Enabling Elements: those that remove obstacles for core actors.

Urban Opportunities

The Circular City Actions Framework provides urban changemakers with five complementary strategies they can use to start working towards a more circular system. 

The framework is action-based to provide users with concrete strategic directions and showcase the desired outcomes of each strategy. 
The framework consists of five complementary **strategies**, under which **sub-strategies** provide further detail. Finally, each sub-strategy consists of a diversity of tangible **solutions** which are framed in relation to key thematic areas.

Based on the work of [Bocken et al. (2016)](https://www.researchgate.net/publication/309699661_Product_design_and_business_model_strategies_for_a_circular_economy), the Four Flows Framework serves as a simple framework for managing resource flows in a circular economy by using less (Narrow), using for longer (Slow), using again (Cycle), and using clean, regenerative materials and energy (Regenerate).

These different principles of circular economy can be applied to our socioeconomic metabolism: we can design stocks like buildings, infrastructure, machinery, and vehicles to be rich resource mines for the future, and design manufactured goods and consumables to be cycled and made regenerative. Furthermore, the focus must also centre on getting more value out of fewer materials. Achieving the aims of a circular economy—minimising material use, regenerating the Earth, and preventing material losses—can be done through these four key strategies mentioned above.

 Gordon Ramsay, Tom Kerridge and Clare Smyth are among the Michelin-starred British chefs who will cook alongside their New York counterpart Dan Barber when he opens a popup restaurant converting food waste into £15 sharing dishes and £32 high tea.  Barber is also recruiting other big names from the UK and Europe. There's just one catch: Diners won't know in advance who is the guest chef on the day they book at the rooftop site at Selfridges department store in London. People wait months for a table at Blue Hill at Stone Barns, in upstate New York, where Barber serves a vegetable-led menu with ingredients from his farm. It was named best restaurant in America 2016. This will be his first venture in the UK.

      The Real Junk Food Project activists feeding schoolchildren food waste in Leeds    The popup, to be called wastED London, runs from 24 February to 2 April, serving menus designed to raise awareness of food waste. Expect quirky dishes with skin and bones and other ingredients you wouldn't normally expect. The original wasteED was a popup in New York two years ago. Multi-Michelin starred Alain Ducasse was among guest chefs—Barber is a hero in the culinary world—but the food was a world away from fine dining, featuring bits of meat, fruit, vegetables and fish you'd normally chuck away. While Ramsay is fiery, Barber is softly spoken and thoughtful. Smyth will open her own restaurant this year after leaving Ramsay's flagship, where she was custodian of his three Michelin stars since 2007. Kerridge is the only chef to hold two Michelin stars at a pub, the Hand & Flowers. Barber said he looks forward to working with chefs and farmers to create the menu. He cited the British bubble and squeak—made with leftovers such as cabbage and potato—as an inspiration. "It's all very exciting," Barber said in an interview at Blue Hill at Stone Barns. "To put together a menu in a different city is to be forced to learn about its history and its agricultural realities. And the food scene in London is very vibrant." It will be an a la carte menu for lunch and dinner. Expect some surprises: In New York, the menu featured kale ribs, bruised vegetables and fruits, fish heads and stale bread, according to Eater.com. Barber is also creating a "Not So Customary" afternoon tea.  Expect tables to be hard to get. When French chef Pierre Koffmann came out of retirement to open on the roof of Selfridges in 2009, he sold out immediately. The run was extended three times. Tickets were also snapped up for Thomas Keller's French Laundry at Harrods in 2011 and for Rene Redzepi's Noma at Claridge's in 2012. Unusual menus are no hindrance. One of Redzepi's dishes featured live ants. “What we are doing is a new way of looking at farming—eating the entirety of the farm in the same way that we have nose-to-tail eating of the animal” Barber is a leader of the farm-to-table cooking movement, where chefs work with local producers and use the freshest organic ingredients in menus that promote sustainable agriculture and highlight individual farmers and fishermen.   "It's too passive," he says. "It allows you to dictate the menu by purchasing what you want from a farm. You end up treating it like a supermarket. I don't reject the term farm to table - I own a restaurant on a farm, so I'd better be careful - but it's too easy.  "I am in favor of expanding the definition of what is waste food.  We get to choose what's for dinner when really we need a pattern of eating that supports a landscape." Barber says he's optimistic, pointing to other recent food trends. "Increasingly, when you go to top restaurants around the world, the carrying card for those restaurants is not lobster, caviar, foie gras anymore," he says. "It is ingredients that speak to place, to an agricultural history that is part of the culture. "What we are doing is a new way of looking at farming—eating the entirety of the farm in the same way that we have nose-to-tail eating of the animal that you all in England exported to the rest of the world. What I like about London is the openness to these ideas. The culture around food waste is fantastic—way ahead of America's." Bloomberg

World Circular Textiles Day takes place every year on 8th October.  Our vision is to galvanise the collective ambitions and goals of people, organisations and businesses to reach a fully circular textiles world by 2050. Our mission is to provide a framework for circularity stakeholders to develop and deliver a collaborative, evolving roadmap and to chart circularity’s momentum annually from the 8th of October until 2050.

What does fully circular by 2050 mean?
- Shared textile resources, in the form of products and raw materials, are kept in **continual circulation**.
- Virgin resources are **replaced with circular materials**.
- Dignity, equity, and equality for the **people** involved in all parts of the circular value chain.

We need to know where we stand today to chart how to get to 100% Circularity by 2050. What circular activity is currently happening in the textiles and apparel industry, and where in the world is it happening? The WCTD Collection aims to answer this question by building the world’s largest digital library of circular textiles case studies.

Imagine a time when…products flow via optimal collection and distribution streams into reusable and repairable product platforms. Reuse and access models are dominant, and products are designed for multiple recirculation before biodegrading (if designed to do so), or being broken down into reusable raw materials for production. People only consume what they need. Production and consumption wastes have been fully eliminated and multifunctional, season-less and timeless fashions are the norm, yet still fulfil our human need for expression and creativity without constraint. All business models, organisations, governments and citizens play a role in maintaining a healthy, functioning circular ecosystem.

A framework of policy instruments that enable and stimulate the transition to the circular economy

It is 2050.  Full systems change has taken place. This wouldn’t have been possible without the immediate action and radical steps taken from 2020 onwards. Many targets had to be identified in the early 2020s and achieved by 2030 to ensure that the 2050 goal happened in full. A sense of urgency, turbo stakeholder collaboration, supportive government regulation and clear, data driven targets enabled the mindsets and systems change needed to transform to a fully circular textiles ecosystem.

A circular economics model underpins what we have created. It reflects and supports a living organism made up of makers, users and restorers, interacting across vibrant and interconnected networks. Checks and balances, alongside transparency and accountability, ensure a healthy system. Financial, environmental, and social metrics have the purpose of serving communities and the planet. There is shared ownership of profit and loss – across all three metrics – throughout the value chain.

In June 2021, real estate trade publication React News reported British department store Selfridges was considering a sale after receiving an offer from an unnamed potential buyer that valued the business at $5.7 billion. It was an eye-popping figure for a chain with just four stores — even if its real estate alone was estimated to be worth about $2.8 billion — and the latest proof that Selfridges’ approach to retail has made it an outlier in a troubled department store sector.Since being acquired by the Weston family in 2003, Selfridges has secured a reputation for being one of retail’s most innovative players. As online shopping and monobrand retail grew their share of the fashion market and once-mighty department stores waned, Selfridges bucked the trend by investing heavily in glitzy renovations and immersive, constantly evolving experiences, primarily in its flagship location on London’s busy Oxford Street.Selfridges leased prime square footage to top fashion brands, while also interweaving these concessions with the retailer’s own wholesale buys to avoid coming across as a generic luxury mall. To this mix, Selfridges added novel pop-ups and a layer of services and experiences, from restaurants and a FaceGym to art installations and a skateboarding bowl. The result was a tapestry of shopping and experience that drew a wide range of visitors — tourists, local office workers and wealthy expatriates alike — to a store that became famous as a social destination, offering a “day out” for clients rather than a place to simply buy things.Selfridges’ big bet on experiential retail (including a $415 million David Chipperfield Architects-designed new accessories hall) seems to have succeeded in earning the time and attention of consumers and translating this into sales: Selfridges revenues doubled to £853 million ($1.2 billion) in 10 years before the Covid-19 pandemic hit, reflecting a compound annual growth rate of 7.5 percent.Since the pandemic, however, Selfridges’ model has been tested: its dependence on luxury brands which largely cater to tax-free shoppers from abroad has made it vulnerable to the lengthy collapse in international tourism. Despite significant upgrades to its e-commerce platform, its online business has remained too small to plug the gap in revenues from store closures during coronavirus lockdowns.Selfridges’ reputation as a social hub worthy of people’s time has helped draw back consumers since stores reopened in the UK in April. Popular food and beverage vendors, brand activations (like a Dior “Riviera” café and pop-up shop on the store’s roof) and a sprawling handbag gallery continue to attract both locals and domestic tourists. The store is integrating new consumption models like resale and rental into its approach in a bid to seduce sustainability- and price-conscious shoppers, and continuing to expand the range of products and services it offers online. But the slow return of key international constituencies continues to pose a challenge to Selfridges’ luxury focused model.In this BoF deep-dive case study, we look at the strategy that helped Selfridges carve out a position of strength before the pandemic, as well as the challenges the department store currently faces to adapt its model to a radically changed fashion market. Today, 21 June, Selfridges launches its Garden Centre, a playful response to a boom in outdoor appreciation, as part of Good Nature, SelfridgesÕ creative theme for 2021. Figures from the Horticultural Trades Association show that over 3 million people started gardening in 2020 as a result of more time spent at home since the first lockdown. The Selfridges Garden Centre sells gardening tools, seeds, indoor and outdoor plants, pots, Selfridges own label compost, its own label yellow gnome. It also sells a curation of fashion, lifestyle and beauty products, as well as an exclusive collection from Prada and a bespoke Selfridges own label merchandise featuring puns such as Herb Your Enthusiasm and Horti-Couture, for gardening and fashion enthusiasts alike. The Selfridges Garden Centre was launched this morning by horticultural consultant and resident gardener Angela Maynard who has advised Selfridges in the development of the concept and the botanical artist Carly Rogers who created a new piece to grace the front of the garden centre celebrating the beauty of the overgrown garden. Within the Garden Centre, The Potting Shed will be a destination for events and advice, with a resident gardener (plus a virtual Òdial-a-gardenerÓ service) and a program of workshops, experiences and happenings which will explore the pleasure and positivity that gardening brings, while promoting practical skills and sustainable methods. Although Selfridges London has the largest offer, every Selfridges store in Birmingham and Manchester will have their own Green House concept and customers are able to shop the range and find gardening information and advice via Selfridges.com. Opening from 18th October until 23rd December, the pop-up will take residence in the Selfridges Toy Department on four, Selfridges London, and will feature a curation of pre-loved and unique toys, from collectable figures, to antique teddies, to classic family-favourite games.As part of Selfridges’ Project Earth commitment to exploring circular retail models, The TOY Project pop-up will be the latest initiative to join its permanent resale platform RESELLFRIDGES. Customers will be able to shop pre-loved Christmas gifts for the family, as well as help the charity to provide toys to the children and families that need them most.Selfridges customers will be invited to donate toys at the pop-up in the run up to Christmas, to prevent waste over the festive period. Donations can be made every weekend from 23rd October to 18th December. These toys will either be sold back through the Selfridges pop up or the TOY Project’s north London store or given a second life and donated to children through the charity. Profits raised from The TOY Project are used to fund workshops and projects such as toy and book libraries and community events. Jane Garfield, Founder of The TOY Project, said: “Parents spend hundreds of millions of pounds on new toys for their children in the UK each year, many of which get little use. Recycling toys helps fund the TOY Project’s work but importantly it also reduces the number of unwanted toys that end up in landfill and in our oceans.
