This collection has been built by a community of passionate researchers, students, and industry professionals as part of <a href="https://worldcirculartextilesday.com/" target="_blank">World Circular Textiles Day</a> (WCTD). 


World Circular Textiles Day takes place every year on 8th October. Our vision is to galvanise the collective ambitions and goals of people, organisations and businesses to reach a fully circular textiles world by 2050. Our mission is to provide a framework for circularity stakeholders to develop and deliver a collaborative, evolving roadmap and to chart circularity’s momentum annually from the 8th of October until 2050.

What does fully circular by 2050 mean?
- Shared textile resources, in the form of products and raw materials, are kept in **continual circulation**.
- Virgin resources are **replaced with circular materials**.
- Dignity, equity, and equality for the **people** involved in all parts of the circular value chain.

We need to know where we stand today to chart how to get to 100% Circularity by 2050. What circular activity is currently happening in the textiles and apparel industry, and where in the world is it happening? The WCTD Collection aims to answer this question by building the world’s largest digital library of circular textiles case studies.

VISION:
Raw materials are renewable, recyclable and safe, kept in continual circulation.

DETAIL:
Imagine a time when…the raw materials that are used to make things are sourced from existing products and regenerative agriculture, via carbon negative and climate neutral processes. Biodegradable raw materials are used for products with biodegradable end routes. Toxic chemicals have been washed out of the global materials pool, disposed of safely and replaced with beneficial alternatives. Virgin fibres made from fossil fuels have been banned, while secondary synthetic fibres, derived from what was already in the system, are kept in constant circulation as a resource. Circularity accounting methods, built on science-based metrics, help to manage a balanced system of resources, across all industries, and in line with the planet’s environmental limits.

Raw Materials and Planetary Boundaries

Cycle strategies aim to cycle and reuse materials at their highest value: they maximise the volume of secondary materials re-entering the economy, ultimately minimising the need for virgin material inputs and therefore also narrowing flows. Of course, virgin materials will always be needed to a degree: all materials degrade and can’t be cycled infinitely, use energy, and require blending with virgin materials to maintain strength and functionality.

A framework of policy instruments that enable and stimulate the transition to the circular economy

The principles of a circular economy concern designing out waste, regenerating ecosystems and keeping items in use. Decoupling the economy from material flows—improving the rate of resource productivity faster than the economic growth rate—is also a consistent guide. By evolving with the growing number of applications of circular economy principles, and consolidating these strategies across thematic areas, Circle Economy’s Key Elements Framework (KE) renders the elements of the circular economy salient and serves as a basis to derive contextual strategies and interventions. 


The Framework consists of:
- Core Elements: Activities directly handling product or material flows; and uniquely,
- Enabling Elements: those that remove obstacles for core actors.

Circle Economy's framework of strategies and activities that define the circular economy

It is 2050.  Full systems change has taken place. This wouldn’t have been possible without the immediate action and radical steps taken from 2020 onwards. Many targets had to be identified in the early 2020s and achieved by 2030 to ensure that the 2050 goal happened in full. A sense of urgency, turbo stakeholder collaboration, supportive government regulation and clear, data driven targets enabled the mindsets and systems change needed to transform to a fully circular textiles ecosystem.

A circular economics model underpins what we have created. It reflects and supports a living organism made up of makers, users and restorers, interacting across vibrant and interconnected networks. Checks and balances, alongside transparency and accountability, ensure a healthy system. Financial, environmental, and social metrics have the purpose of serving communities and the planet. There is shared ownership of profit and loss – across all three metrics – throughout the value chain.

Based on the work of [Bocken et al. (2016)](https://www.researchgate.net/publication/309699661_Product_design_and_business_model_strategies_for_a_circular_economy), the Four Flows Framework serves as a simple framework for managing resource flows in a circular economy by using less (Narrow), using for longer (Slow), using again (Cycle), and using clean, regenerative materials and energy (Regenerate).

These different principles of circular economy can be applied to our socioeconomic metabolism: we can design stocks like buildings, infrastructure, machinery, and vehicles to be rich resource mines for the future, and design manufactured goods and consumables to be cycled and made regenerative. Furthermore, the focus must also centre on getting more value out of fewer materials. Achieving the aims of a circular economy—minimising material use, regenerating the Earth, and preventing material losses—can be done through these four key strategies mentioned above.

 Makers Sustainability Fashion is focused on developing circular designs and systems, but to get to the end goal, companies from across the industry will have to collaborate. The Circle Book aims to show what is possible when companies “Act Together.” Founded by Lenzing, Meidea and Officina+39 and launched mid pandemic in 2020, the project unites suppliers and technicians that use sustainable materials and processes in order to show the potential for circular, traceable fashion. Unlike the first edition of The Circle Book, which came together entirely digitally during lockdown with virtual design, the second iteration features constructed garments. The concept behind the second collection is “Culture.In,” which speaks to the role the home is playing in consumers’ lives now and in the future. It also reflects the blending of the natural world with the indoor environment. The designs were built to reduce waste, with minimal cuts and seams. Styles in the denim-centric collection lean toward oversize silhouettes, with culottes, a rain cape, utility jacket and vests among the shapes.  Mills Calik Denim and Tejidos Royo developed the collection fabrics. In a circular move, many of the textiles include TENCEL™ x REFIBRA™ Lyocell, a cellulosic fiber made of a mixture of wood pulp and cotton textile waste. Materials were dyed hues like emerald, lavender and salmon using Officina+39’s Recycrom dye, which creates pigments out of fabric scraps. Rounding out the low-impact materials are threads from Crafil, ribbons and labels by Ribbontex and buttons and rivets from Spring 85.  The garments were constructed by Dr. Bock Industries, and they were finished by Dr. Bock’s RGT Laundry. To achieve effects like bleaching and distressing, the collection used Officina+39’s treatments that come with sustainability credentials such as low water usage and permanganate-free formulas. During Munich Fabric Start’s Bluezone show, The Circle Book 2 will launching with a stand featuring mannequins modeling some of the looks. As part of the debut, the partners will be hosting a press conference on Aug. 31 and a panel discussion on Sept. 1.  Makers Sustainability Collaboration is going to be key in driving sustainable change in the fashion industry. This is especially true for creating more circular garments. In a single garment, there are numerous inputs—fabric, trims, dye and more—that all need to be considered to make clothing that can more easily be recycled. There also needs to be traceability and a full understanding of what these inputs are to enable a closed loop. This is the idea behind The Circle Book, a project developed by TENCEL™, Meidea and Officina+39.  Founded on the idea of “Act Together,” The Circle Book launched in 2020 as a digital treatise on what is possible in traceability and circularity. For the second edition, the project brought together 10 total partners to build a physical collection, which is on view at Bluezone through Sept. 1. By working together, sharing ideas and vision, in 2020 we first created the lookbook and design tool called THE CIRCLE BOOK from the ACT TOGETHER partnership between TENCEL™, Meidea and Officina+39. Transparency is the foundation of the entire project, starting from creative ideation, to fibers and fabrics, forward to finishing and onto final garments. We aim, through our actions, to trace a new path in education for future generations of mindful designers. We offer openness of knowledge in order to contribute to a new creative sustainable fashion model based around company collaborations. This year we’ve expanded the project and we are ready to launch THE CIRCLE BOOK SECOND EDITION in collaboration with an enlarged group of partners – a team with common goals focused on transparency and circularity +in denim design. The additional partners include: Calik Denim, Crafil, DrBock+RGT, Ribbontex, Spring85, and Tejidos Royo. The capsule is entitled CULTURE.IN: we have created a synergistic alliance of 10 companies, which includes all the players in the supply chain, transparently and tracing all the actions during the processes. From the fiber to the final product, a virtuous production line is expressed in the value of each company’s product and which envisions circularity as a distinctive element. We have created a concrete project that articulates a cohesive supply chain, having the opportunity to ACT TOGETHER to make the message stronger and that tells the values of each individual company. The goal is to create engagement with customers who are tackling the issue of circularity. Brands can find a reliable and traceable supply chain, almost an adaptable model for their collections and products. Following this goal, the backstage of the process is told and shared step by step through images and videos, a narrative that tells the production from the beginning to the final look book and the campaign.   The inspiration behind the project comes from the way of living. In the future our homes will be transformed into self-sufficient ecosystems or habitats, in which we live comfortably and evolve together with the people who live in them. This interconnection develops with less environmental impact and producing little waste. Nature integrates into spaces, influencing and merging with clothing to become an extension of the outdoors and atmosphere. We conceived and designed the collection following the guidelines of circularity to include elements that can be incorporated into the production, recycled and degradable materials, items that can be easily disassembled and reassembled, as well as being accessible to many people. Lenzing - Refibra

Officina +39 is a team with common passion for textile world and fashion. A workshop of new ideas coordinated by qualified technicians, dedicated to application home lab, creating new "effects" and finishing. Officina+39 offers a selected sustainable range of chemical specialties, dyestuffs and pigments, in particular, for denim and garment fields. Recycrom creates a full range of pigment powders using textile fibers from used clothing and manufacturing waste.
