World Circular Textiles Day takes place every year on 8th October. Our vision is to galvanise the collective ambitions and goals of people, organisations and businesses to reach a fully circular textiles world by 2050. Our mission is to provide a framework for circularity stakeholders to develop and deliver a collaborative, evolving roadmap and to chart circularity’s momentum annually from the 8th of October until 2050.

What does fully circular by 2050 mean?
- Shared textile resources, in the form of products and raw materials, are kept in **continual circulation**.
- Virgin resources are **replaced with circular materials**.
- Dignity, equity, and equality for the **people** involved in all parts of the circular value chain.

We need to know where we stand today to chart how to get to 100% Circularity by 2050. What circular activity is currently happening in the textiles and apparel industry, and where in the world is it happening? The WCTD Collection aims to answer this question by building the world’s largest digital library of circular textiles case studies.

VISION:
Raw materials are renewable, recyclable and safe, kept in continual circulation.

DETAIL:
Imagine a time when…the raw materials that are used to make things are sourced from existing products and regenerative agriculture, via carbon negative and climate neutral processes. Biodegradable raw materials are used for products with biodegradable end routes. Toxic chemicals have been washed out of the global materials pool, disposed of safely and replaced with beneficial alternatives. Virgin fibres made from fossil fuels have been banned, while secondary synthetic fibres, derived from what was already in the system, are kept in constant circulation as a resource. Circularity accounting methods, built on science-based metrics, help to manage a balanced system of resources, across all industries, and in line with the planet’s environmental limits.

Imagine a time when…products flow via optimal collection and distribution streams into reusable and repairable product platforms. Reuse and access models are dominant, and products are designed for multiple recirculation before biodegrading (if designed to do so), or being broken down into reusable raw materials for production. People only consume what they need. Production and consumption wastes have been fully eliminated and multifunctional, season-less and timeless fashions are the norm, yet still fulfil our human need for expression and creativity without constraint. All business models, organisations, governments and citizens play a role in maintaining a healthy, functioning circular ecosystem.

Whilst no two countries are the same, there are still obvious similarities between some of them, with discernible development patterns and parallels in evidence. Common problems and shared solutions help place unique country identities and individual issues in context.

Whilst this classification is far from clear-cut and exhibits some overlap, it does underline how the discourse on transitioning to a circular economy needs to account for both differences and commonalities, if we are to arrive at a more strategic and instructive analysis. DISRUPT

It is 2050.  Full systems change has taken place. This wouldn’t have been possible without the immediate action and radical steps taken from 2020 onwards. Many targets had to be identified in the early 2020s and achieved by 2030 to ensure that the 2050 goal happened in full. A sense of urgency, turbo stakeholder collaboration, supportive government regulation and clear, data driven targets enabled the mindsets and systems change needed to transform to a fully circular textiles ecosystem.

A circular economics model underpins what we have created. It reflects and supports a living organism made up of makers, users and restorers, interacting across vibrant and interconnected networks. Checks and balances, alongside transparency and accountability, ensure a healthy system. Financial, environmental, and social metrics have the purpose of serving communities and the planet. There is shared ownership of profit and loss – across all three metrics – throughout the value chain.

The Circular City Actions Framework provides urban changemakers with five complementary strategies they can use to start working towards a more circular system. 

The framework is action-based to provide users with concrete strategic directions and showcase the desired outcomes of each strategy. 
The framework consists of five complementary **strategies**, under which **sub-strategies** provide further detail. Finally, each sub-strategy consists of a diversity of tangible **solutions** which are framed in relation to key thematic areas.

An action-based framework for local governments working towards circular cities

Based on the work of [Bocken et al. (2016)](https://www.researchgate.net/publication/309699661_Product_design_and_business_model_strategies_for_a_circular_economy), the Four Flows Framework serves as a simple framework for managing resource flows in a circular economy by using less (Narrow), using for longer (Slow), using again (Cycle), and using clean, regenerative materials and energy (Regenerate).

These different principles of circular economy can be applied to our socioeconomic metabolism: we can design stocks like buildings, infrastructure, machinery, and vehicles to be rich resource mines for the future, and design manufactured goods and consumables to be cycled and made regenerative. Furthermore, the focus must also centre on getting more value out of fewer materials. Achieving the aims of a circular economy—minimising material use, regenerating the Earth, and preventing material losses—can be done through these four key strategies mentioned above.

Since 1993 we’ve created clothing that meets the real needs of everyday life – with timeless style, quality, and fits. By ensuring each piece is designed to last, we can do our part in leaving the world a better place than we found it.
The pandemic brought unanticipated challenges to the fashion industry. Thanks to our existing approach of fewer, better pieces, we were able to make quick decisions and find creative solutions that were in line with our business trajectory. Like many brands, the experience encouraged us to take stock and we decided to write a new set of goals that reflect the world we’re living in today. Everything we do is now measured against this 2030 framework (which can be found below).
We’re grateful to share this journey towards a more sustainable future with you.
EXPLORE OUR 2020 SUSTAINABILITY HIGHLIGHTS BELOWREAD THE LATEST REPORT HERE
2020 was a year of finding quick, creative solutions, and our range strategy was no exception. We’d always plannedto reduce the number of styles in our assortment, but the pandemic meant that this change would take effect sooner. Thanks to our strong relationships with long-termsuppliers,we were able to focus on fewer, better piecesfor the Autumn Winter 2020 collection. It combined newpieces with designs from previous seasons – a seamlesstransition due to our timeless aesthetic and quality. We’vealways seen our garments as part of a complete, long-lasting wardrobe, and this updated strategy onlyreinforces that mindset.
In addition to reducing the size of our assortment, we alsoincreased the percentage represented by our Core Collection. The permanent range consists of classic,non-seasonal styles that create the foundation for a long-lasting wardrobe. They’re the pieces our customers keepcoming back to, and they never go on sale. Because theydon’t follow the typical fashion calendar, we’re able toproduce them during slower times of the year and give oursuppliers continuity of production. Mistra Future Fashion revealed that even just doubling the number of uses for a garment’s lifecycle eliminated almost 50% of the impact of production.
The Swedish Wool project began in 2019 when we discovered that the wool byproduct from the local meatindustry was going to waste. We partnered with another Swedish brand, Röjk, and a Swedish sheep farm in Kungsör to develop a new traceable supply chain that put this valuable resource to use. 
After the success of the first Swedish Wool Sweater we’ve begun scaling up the project with the support of Axfoundation, allowing us to bring in more brands and stakeholders. We’ve increased production from 120 piecesin 2019 to 350 the following year. In 2020, we alsoreceived the Draper’s Sustainable Fashion Award forBest Supply Chain Initiative.
Based on our fibre tool, 67%of our styles were made in moresustainable (Class 1-2) fibresin 2020.
We’re proud to have increased our use of recycled polyester to 56% in 2020 (compared to 22% in 2019).
As part of our circular designgoals, we’ve increased the amountof styles using mono fibres to 43%in 2020 (compared to 39% in 2019).
Circular fashion has always been at the centre of our approach and is something that we constantly strive towards. In 2020, we furthered these efforts with the Filippa K Studio. It began as an experimental retail spacefor repairing, remaking, and reselling pre-loved and pastseason garments that we have been taking back fromcustomers either through our Collect programs or as claims. 
We’ve now integrated it into our Stockholm headquarters, with a dedicated team that’s hands on with the garments –sorting, repairing, and remaking them so we can increasethe longevity of our clothing, teach our community how to care for what they have, and gather valuable insight intoour product development process with the data from theuser phase of our garments. The Studio pieces are sold inselect retail locations across Europe. We have been sending the cutting scraps from the making of our wool suiting and outerwear garments to be recycled into new yarns and fabrics for some years now, and in 2020 we sent 1000kg of our wool cutting scraps to Manteco, a key partner mill of Filippa K’s in Prato, Italy. They’ll use this to produce a new fabric from our waste.
In 2020 we began replacing our plastic packaging withrecyclable FSC-certified paper bags. By doing so, we’vealready reduced our plastic use from outgoing e-commerceshipments by roughly 2400kg. We’ve also taken steps toimprove the type of plastics our vendors use when workingwith our products. So far 14% of our plastic for incomingshipments from our garment vendors is recycled orbiodegradable. 
We measure carbon emissions from the electricity used atour Swedish stores – which comes from renewablehydropower sources – and globally from the fuel consumedby our inbound and outbound transports. Our total carbon emissions from these sources has decreased from719 tonnes of CO2e in 2019 to 526 tonnes of CO2e in 2020,representing a decrease of 27%, which is partly related toa decrease in incoming transport due to lower orders fromour suppliers. 
While we recognise that we still have a long way to go,these changes help us work towards reducing our annualcarbon impact. In 2020, we continued our partnership that began in 2018 with TrusTrace: a groundbreaking digital platform based on blockchain technology that provides supply chain and transparency tools to accelerate sustainability. With TrusTrace, we can trace the supply chain of a garment back to the raw materials. The system also helps us analyze environmental and social concerns in our supply chain.
To guide us in our mission and sustainability efforts, wecontinuously work towards a set of 2030 goals that help usimprove in every area of our business. Sustainable production and consumption has always been at the core of Filippa K. Working closely with their suppliers across the globe, they design high quality, environmentally responsible garments that are made to be worn and loved for many years.Filippa K wanted to explore methods of better communicating this story with their customers through their own stores and multi brand e-commerce retailers. With TrusTrace, they have successfully integrated their sustainability claims into the largest e-commerce platform in Europe - to empower their shoppers to take more responsible and informed choices that match their values.The challengeImprove process for sustainable product claimsLike many other leading fashion brands, Filippa K spent countless hours in excel and email loops sharing, verifying and updating sustainability data coming from various sources. The accuracy and validity of this data was challenging as it was manually processed and often fragmented down the line. They were looking for a partner to help automate the data collection and verification in order to make certain claims on their products with their retailers.The SolutionAutomated tool to verify sustainability data The TrusTrace platform automates the whole process of data collection, validation and assigning the right sustainability labels. The system integrates the data from the PLM and ERP systems to understand the product and define what information is to be collected from which supplier based on a pre-defined logic. By combining the product design data with product/facility certifications and lower tier supplier data, TrusTrace checks which products comply with labelling requirements and assigns the relevant sustainability labels.The ResultProduct labels to showcase sustainable productsTrusTrace enabled Filippa K to validate and communicate their sustainability efforts more efficiently and at a faster rate, and to exhibit this information directly on the retailer’s e-commerce platform. The Filippa-K team spends less than 5% of the initial time spent on these activities whilst simultaneously have improved the accuracy of data.

A partnership that began in 2018, Filippa K has worked with TrusTrace to trace their supply chain back to the raw material stage, allowing them access to reliable data to better improve their environmental and social impacts. This is a survey that dives into understanding the policy environment around specific circular solutions.

  Today, Stockholm-based SaaS company TrusTrace announced the launch of its new blockchain-based solution for supply chain traceability – TrusTrace Certified Material Compliance. The company has an existing product traceability and supply chain transparency platform and considers its new innovation a one-stop-shop solution for material compliance. Sports brand adidas is one of its first adopters and provided early input into its development in line with the company’s ambitious sustainability goals for the coming years. Globally, the fashion industry produces almost four times the environmental impact of the airline industry, with 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions emanating from the production of apparel and footwear. The unsustainable ways in which fast fashion is produced is one of the leading causes of climate change. A lack of regulation and unchecked greenwashing from major companies only exacerbates its environmental impact. TrusTrace Certified Material Compliance aims to combat misinformation and improve transparency and traceability within the fashion industry. “In the midst of global greenwashing and challenges with unsubstantiated claims, brands and regulators are moving quickly to instill confidence among consumers that products are, indeed, as sustainable as they claim to be,” said Shameek Ghosh, CEO of TrusTrace. “Brands that want to establish near real-time traceability at the lot level by mapping the movement of raw materials to finished goods – and automatically calculate the sustainability metrics of those goods – now have a proven solution in TrusTrace Certified Material Compliance.” The solution provides a lot of information about a product’s material composition and supply chain transactions in one single place. Examples of the processes it can track are the calculation of material waste, a product’s origins, and the documentation of the percentage of certified vs non-certified material content. Hence brands can demonstrate their compliance with national and international standards and regulations. TrusTrace developed its technology using a combination of AI, blockchain, IoT and software automation. This allows near-instantaneous updating of garment information, as well as the assurance that the details are immutable, traceable, and transparent. Other brands that TrusTrace has worked with include Fjällräven, Decathlon, Filippa K, and Coop. In October, the startup raised a $6 million Series A funding led by Industrifonden and Fairpoint Capital. Fashion for Good is also a supporter. Meanwhile, other fashion traceability solutions that use blockchain include TextileGenesis used by the Cotton Trust Protocol, Aware adopted by the Denim Deal initiative and a blockchain sustainability initiative adopted by the UK Fashion and Textile Association in association with several fashion retailers.

Not only does this tackle potentially fraudulent transactions within the supply chain, but an added benefit is the ability to uncover wasteful systems.
