This collection has been built by a community of passionate researchers, students, and industry professionals as part of <a href="https://worldcirculartextilesday.com/" target="_blank">World Circular Textiles Day</a> (WCTD). 


World Circular Textiles Day takes place every year on 8th October. Our vision is to galvanise the collective ambitions and goals of people, organisations and businesses to reach a fully circular textiles world by 2050. Our mission is to provide a framework for circularity stakeholders to develop and deliver a collaborative, evolving roadmap and to chart circularity’s momentum annually from the 8th of October until 2050.

What does fully circular by 2050 mean?
- Shared textile resources, in the form of products and raw materials, are kept in **continual circulation**.
- Virgin resources are **replaced with circular materials**.
- Dignity, equity, and equality for the **people** involved in all parts of the circular value chain.

We need to know where we stand today to chart how to get to 100% Circularity by 2050. What circular activity is currently happening in the textiles and apparel industry, and where in the world is it happening? The WCTD Collection aims to answer this question by building the world’s largest digital library of circular textiles case studies.

Rampant material extraction is pushing the ecosystems of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) to their limits. Over 11% of global raw materials are extracted within the region, yet it represents only about 8% of the world's population.

[*The Circularity Gap Report* (CGR) Latin America and the Caribbean](https://www.circularity-gap.world/lac), a first of its kind, demonstrates how the region can leverage the circular economy to tackle systemic inefficiencies in satisfying societal needs, conserve its unique natural wealth, and improve its people’s well-being.

To devise pathways for a circular transition, the report analysed the sectors where circular interventions could yield the most positive impact—environmentally, economically, and socially. This entails shifting to a circular food system, building a circular built environment, advancing circular manufacturing, transforming the energy system, reducing waste generation, and improve waste cycling.

VISION:
Raw materials are renewable, recyclable and safe, kept in continual circulation.

DETAIL:
Imagine a time when…the raw materials that are used to make things are sourced from existing products and regenerative agriculture, via carbon negative and climate neutral processes. Biodegradable raw materials are used for products with biodegradable end routes. Toxic chemicals have been washed out of the global materials pool, disposed of safely and replaced with beneficial alternatives. Virgin fibres made from fossil fuels have been banned, while secondary synthetic fibres, derived from what was already in the system, are kept in constant circulation as a resource. Circularity accounting methods, built on science-based metrics, help to manage a balanced system of resources, across all industries, and in line with the planet’s environmental limits.

VISION:
Products and services are designed for multiple use and material value retention, with maximum positive impact.

DETAIL: 
Imagine a time when…products flow via optimal collection and distribution streams into reusable and repairable product platforms. Reuse and access models are dominant, and products are designed for multiple recirculation before biodegrading (if designed to do so), or being broken down into reusable raw materials for production. People only consume what they need. Production and consumption wastes have been fully eliminated and multifunctional, season-less and timeless fashions are the norm, yet still fulfil our human need for expression and creativity without constraint. All business models, organisations, governments and citizens play a role in maintaining a healthy, functioning circular ecosystem.

The principles of a circular economy concern designing out waste, regenerating ecosystems and keeping items in use. Decoupling the economy from material flows—improving the rate of resource productivity faster than the economic growth rate—is also a consistent guide. By evolving with the growing number of applications of circular economy principles, and consolidating these strategies across thematic areas, Circle Economy’s Key Elements Framework (KE) renders the elements of the circular economy salient and serves as a basis to derive contextual strategies and interventions. 


The Framework consists of:
- Core Elements: Activities directly handling product or material flows; and uniquely,
- Enabling Elements: those that remove obstacles for core actors.

Circle Economy's framework of strategies and activities that define the circular economy

It is 2050.  Full systems change has taken place. This wouldn’t have been possible without the immediate action and radical steps taken from 2020 onwards. Many targets had to be identified in the early 2020s and achieved by 2030 to ensure that the 2050 goal happened in full. A sense of urgency, turbo stakeholder collaboration, supportive government regulation and clear, data driven targets enabled the mindsets and systems change needed to transform to a fully circular textiles ecosystem.

A circular economics model underpins what we have created. It reflects and supports a living organism made up of makers, users and restorers, interacting across vibrant and interconnected networks. Checks and balances, alongside transparency and accountability, ensure a healthy system. Financial, environmental, and social metrics have the purpose of serving communities and the planet. There is shared ownership of profit and loss – across all three metrics – throughout the value chain.

Based on the work of [Bocken et al. (2016)](https://www.researchgate.net/publication/309699661_Product_design_and_business_model_strategies_for_a_circular_economy), the Four Flows Framework serves as a simple framework for managing resource flows in a circular economy by using less (Narrow), using for longer (Slow), using again (Cycle), and using clean, regenerative materials and energy (Regenerate).

These different principles of circular economy can be applied to our socioeconomic metabolism: we can design stocks like buildings, infrastructure, machinery, and vehicles to be rich resource mines for the future, and design manufactured goods and consumables to be cycled and made regenerative. Furthermore, the focus must also centre on getting more value out of fewer materials. Achieving the aims of a circular economy—minimising material use, regenerating the Earth, and preventing material losses—can be done through these four key strategies mentioned above.

Foto: Renner | Divulgação Na última quinta-feira (23), a Renner lançou uma nova edição da Re Jeans, coleção com diversos atributos sustentáveis, confeccionada dentro do conceito de economia circular. Em 2018, a marca apresentou sua primeira coleção do projeto e criou o selo Re-Moda Responsável, que passou a assinar todas as ações da empresa na área de sustentabilidade.
De lá para cá, a atuação responsável da Renner evoluiu, assim como o Re Jeans. A nova versão desta linha de denim foi produzida com um consumo menor de água: a redução média é de 44% em comparação com uma peça convencional. 
Para tanto, desenvolveu uma metodologia de pegada hídrica que vem permitindo mapear o uso de água nas etapas de confecção e acabamento de cada jeans. O objetivo é fazer um trabalho de engajamento junto à cadeia de fornecimento e melhorar os processos empregados, além de dar visibilidade aos clientes sobre o nível de água consumido nos diferentes modelos disponíveis para compra.

Outra novidade é que o mix de matérias-primas usadas na confecção de Re Jeans foi aprimorado: assim como em 2018, os fornecedores aproveitaram sobras de tecido – quase todas da produção da própria varejista -, que foram desfibradas e transformadas em um novo fio, evitando a geração de resíduos e originando peças com menor impacto ambiental (a chamada economia circular). 
Desta vez, os produtos também levaram algodão com certificação BCI e GRS em sua composição e não tiveram adição de poliéster, o que faz com que o Re Jeans possa ser reciclado novamente, perpetuando o ciclo do desenvolvimento sustentável.
“A Renner tem avançado em sua proposta de moda responsável com uma estratégia consistente, inovando em processos e métodos em colaboração com sua rede de fornecedores. O novo Re Jeans representa mais um passo nesta direção, ao reunir qualidade, informação de moda e diferentes propriedades menos impactantes ao meio ambiente”, afirma o diretor presidente da Lojas Renner, Fabio Faccio.

A coleção cápsula de Re Jeans é composta por peças femininas e masculinas, com opções de calças, shorts, macacões e camisas, que podem ser adquiridas no e-commerce da marca e em sete lojas selecionadas no Brasil. Algumas peças fazem uma releitura de modelos clássicos dos anos 1980 e 1990, enquanto outras trazem composições mais atemporais.
A Renner ainda buscou uma solução responsável para comunicar essa linha de jeans. As tags de papel reciclado que costumam identificar os produtos do selo Re foram substituídas por uma gravação em silk – são impressões na parte interna da roupa, onde consta a descrição sobre as boas práticas envolvidas na produção.
Consistência em sustentabilidade
Atualmente, 75% de todo o jeans da Renner já é feito a partir de materiais e/ou processos de menor impacto. Mas o denim é só um dos exemplos. Hoje, todas as coleções incluem roupas do selo Re, de diferentes tecidos e estilos. Desde 2017, a marca comercializou quase 90 milhões de peças “responsáveis”, confeccionadas com matérias-primas como o fio reciclado, o algodão certificado, a viscose certificada, a poliamida biodegradável e o liocel, além de técnicas como o upcycling.
A evolução contínua está relacionada ao conjunto de ações para o alcance dos compromissos públicos assumidos pela empresa para 2021: 
ter 80% dos produtos menos impactantes, sendo 100% do algodão certificado; suprir 75% do consumo corporativo de energia com fontes renováveis de baixo impacto; reduzir em 20% as emissões de CO2 em relação aos níveis de 2017; e ter toda a cadeia nacional e internacional de fornecedores com certificação socioambiental. 

 Você sabia que roupas sem utilidade ou que chegaram ao final de sua vida útil não devem ser descartadas no lixo comum? Por isso a Renner tem o EcoEstilo, serviço de logística reversa que já existe em todas as lojas do país para embalagens e frascos de perfumaria e beleza e em outras 15 para roupas. Agora, essa função está sendo ampliada e clientes de outras 50 lojas no Brasil também poderão aproveitar o serviço de logística reversa de roupas. Como funciona: Algumas lojas possuem coletores EcoEstilo. Levando suas peças sem utilidade até eles, a Renner se encarrega de enviá-las para reciclagem ou reutilização, a fim de que tenham sua vida útil prolongada. O conteúdo deixado na loja é coletado e encaminhado para o nosso parceiro que faz uma triagem inicial, separando as peças que serão enviadas para reciclagem daquelas que irão para reutilização.   A triagem acontece por etapas e separa as roupas em diferentes categorias : 1. Roupas contaminadas, que não poderão participar do processo de logística reversa e serão destinada a aterros; 2. Tipo de material, que determina se a peça vai para upcycling/doação ou reciclagem; 3. Peças para reciclagem, onde os aviamentos são retirados e as peças são organizadas por cor, para voltarem a ser novos fios. Na reciclagem, as peças são desfibradas e essas fibras podem virar um novo fio. Dependendo da tecnologia utilizada na fiação, o fio poderá ser usado na confecção de tecidos para novas roupas ou ser utilizado para artesanato, como crochê e tricô. Além disso, essas fibras também podem ser usadas para diversas utilidades: enchimento de almofadas ou de bonecos, fazer cobertores e até como preenchimento de forro de carros na indústria automotiva, beneficiando vários setores da economia. Na reutilização, as roupas podem ser encaminhadas para upcycling e transformadas em novos produtos, sem precisar passar pelo processo de reciclagem. Ou então podem ser doadas para organizações sociais.  EcoEstilo. Em todas as lojas, desde 2011, são disponibilizados coletores na área de perfumaria para que clientes e colaboradores possam descartar embalagens e frascos usados de produtos de perfumaria e beleza, comprados nas lojas da Renner ou não. A esse material é dado o destino ambientalmente correto.

The fashion retail Renner has evolved its responsible fashion lines by implementing innovative production processes and methods to increase the efficiency of its resources.&nbsp;In 2020, the company launched its new denim collection&nbsp;Re Jeans, developed with recycled denim made from landfill-destined textile waste whilst significantly reducing their water consumption. The textile waste is recycled through a process of separation, defibrillation, and spinning and is then ready to be reinserted into the denim production process. Re Jeans are free of synthetic fibres and made with certified cotton (Better Cotton Initiative and Global Recycle Standard), which guarantees its recyclability at the end of life.&nbsp;
