The principles of a circular economy concern designing out waste, regenerating ecosystems and keeping items in use. Decoupling the economy from material flows—improving the rate of resource productivity faster than the economic growth rate—is also a consistent guide. By evolving with the growing number of applications of circular economy principles, and consolidating these strategies across thematic areas, Circle Economy’s Key Elements Framework (KE) renders the elements of the circular economy salient and serves as a basis to derive contextual strategies and interventions. 


The Framework consists of:
- Core Elements: Activities directly handling product or material flows; and uniquely,
- Enabling Elements: those that remove obstacles for core actors.

Circle Economy's framework of strategies and activities that define the circular economy

Based on the work of [Bocken et al. (2016)](https://www.researchgate.net/publication/309699661_Product_design_and_business_model_strategies_for_a_circular_economy), the Four Flows Framework serves as a simple framework for managing resource flows in a circular economy by using less (Narrow), using for longer (Slow), using again (Cycle), and using clean, regenerative materials and energy (Regenerate).

These different principles of circular economy can be applied to our socioeconomic metabolism: we can design stocks like buildings, infrastructure, machinery, and vehicles to be rich resource mines for the future, and design manufactured goods and consumables to be cycled and made regenerative. Furthermore, the focus must also centre on getting more value out of fewer materials. Achieving the aims of a circular economy—minimising material use, regenerating the Earth, and preventing material losses—can be done through these four key strategies mentioned above.

  Borrowing is a much more efficient use of limited natural resources – all the raw materials, water and fuel that are required to manufacture and transport new tools around the world are shared between multiple borrowers rather than just one person who might only use the tool once or twice.  

             How much does it cost? Borrowing is free and membership is by an annual donation (suggested £20). Donations help with the cost of maintaining and repairing tools to keep them in tip-top condition and make them last longer. How do I sign up? Create an online account here and read and sign the members agreement. Then bring your annual membership donation and two pieces of ID (one photo ID and the other showing the name and address you gave in your myturn registration) when you come to collect your tools. Once you've done this you'll be a full member of the tool library. When and where do I pick up tools? Reserve the tools you need by midnight on Thursday and collect them between 12 and 2 on Saturday. When you reserve tools you will be asked to select a collection time slot - this is to help limit the number of people waiting outside as we can only have two people inside the tool library at any one time (due to Covid). Collect your tools from the tool library which is based at South Seeds, 514 Victoria Road. What happens if I return tools late? Return of all power tools and the bike trailer after their due date will incur a late fee of £1 per week per tool. We decided to start charging late fees to promote timely return of popular tools so that as many people as possible have a chance to borrow what they need. How long can I borrow tools for? Tools can be borrowed for up to three weeks at a time. What is the tool library doing to help protect against Covid-19? All tools are quarantined for 72 hours after their return to the tool library and we use gloves or sanitise our hands before preparing your tools for collection. Tools are placed on a labelled shelf for contactless collection. We have a huge perspex screen set up and a maximum of two people can be in the tool library at a time. If there are two people inside already, please wait outside until someone else leaves. Please also wear a mask whilst inside the tool library. Do you take donations of tools? Yes, we would love your working power tools in good condition.
