The workforce is an essential lever for transforming our economy from linear to circular. The Circular Jobs Initiative aims to maximise the employment opportunities offered by the circular economy. It provides practical support and insights to businesses and governments that want to adopt circular strategies that have a positive social impact.The Circular Jobs Initiative works through three focus areas: 

- Upskilling the workforce

- Quality of work

- Inclusive job opportunities 

CJI has defined circular jobs as any occupation that directly involves or indirectly supports one of the strategies of the circular economy. It distinguishes between three types of circular jobs: core, enabling and indirectly circular jobs.

**Core circular jobs** are all jobs that ensure the closure of raw material cycles, including jobs in repair, renewable energy, waste and resource management. 

**‍Enabling circular jobs** are jobs that remove barriers for and enable the acceleration and upscaling of core circular activities, including jobs that arise in leasing, education, design and digital technology. 

**Indirectly circular jobs** are jobs that occur in other sectors that do not play a direct role in furthering the transition to the circular economy but can still adopt circular strategies. They include jobs that provide services to core circular strategies, including jobs in information services, logistics and the public sector.

The Knowledge Hub Collection includes examples of circular jobs, publications, reports, case studies and policies different organisations, governments and businesses are already using to advocate for a person-centred circular economy.

Minimise waste through diversion: Instead of sending waste to landfill, it is redirected into other industrial processes for handling, treatment, recycling, recovery, or reuse in various forms.

Second-hand sale, distribution

Manufactured goods, such as vehicles, textiles, appliances and equipment and their associated production processes are big employers but:
- production processes often rely on fossil fuels and currently drive one-third of the overshoot on the climate change planetary boundary due to its GHG production, 
- material- and energy-intensive industrial activities are linked to deforestation and drive 15% on both the land use and freshwater planetary boundaries, 
- manufacturing goods results in substantial amounts of hazardous industrial waste and leaks chemicals into the environment.

Here, circular solutions must tackle the full value chain, but material demand must also shrink: this will necessitate a societal shift to favouring sufficiency over excess and reducing consumption to sustainable levels. Our four key solutions for manufactured goods are:
- Mainstream industrial symbiosis and efficiency : Achieve process improvements, scrap diversion and reduction in yield losses through greater industrial symbiosis and efficiency. Foster tighter collaboration within and between industries to deliver powerful material and emissions savings.
- Extend the lifetime of machinery, equipment, and goods: Maximise the lifetime of goods that serve our daily needs to bring a number of environmental benefits. 
- Buy what's needed: Reduce the number of purchases of common electronic goods, appliances, and other equipment to sufficiency levels. 
- Eschew fast fashion in favour of sustainable textiles: Drastically reduce new clothing purchases. All used clothing should go on to be repaired, reused or, if needed, recycled appropriately. Prioritise natural and local textile manufacturing, as well as higher-quality and more durable garments.

The principles of a circular economy concern designing out waste, regenerating ecosystems and keeping items in use. Decoupling the economy from material flows—improving the rate of resource productivity faster than the economic growth rate—is also a consistent guide. By evolving with the growing number of applications of circular economy principles, and consolidating these strategies across thematic areas, Circle Economy’s Key Elements Framework (KE) renders the elements of the circular economy salient and serves as a basis to derive contextual strategies and interventions. 


The Framework consists of:
- Core Elements: Activities directly handling product or material flows; and uniquely,
- Enabling Elements: those that remove obstacles for core actors.

Based on the work of [Bocken et al. (2016)](https://www.researchgate.net/publication/309699661_Product_design_and_business_model_strategies_for_a_circular_economy), the Four Flows Framework serves as a simple framework for managing resource flows in a circular economy by using less (Narrow), using for longer (Slow), using again (Cycle), and using clean, regenerative materials and energy (Regenerate).

These different principles of circular economy can be applied to our socioeconomic metabolism: we can design stocks like buildings, infrastructure, machinery, and vehicles to be rich resource mines for the future, and design manufactured goods and consumables to be cycled and made regenerative. Furthermore, the focus must also centre on getting more value out of fewer materials. Achieving the aims of a circular economy—minimising material use, regenerating the Earth, and preventing material losses—can be done through these four key strategies mentioned above.

Op vrijdag 27/11/20 besliste het Overlegcomité dat de niet-essentiële winkels in België de deuren weer mogen openen, onder strikte voorwaarden.  
Ook spullen brengen is vanaf dan weer mogelijk. 
Ophalingen aan huis verschillen per regio: neem hiervoor contact op met De Kringwinkel in jouw buurt.
 * Check zeker ook de website en Facebookpagina van De Kringwinkel in jouw buurt. Mogelijk gaan een aantal Kringwinkels en brengpunten pas een paar dagen later open om de veiligheid te garanderen. Bepaalde winkels werken op afspraak om goederen te brengen.  Ook online blijven we open!

Alle producten van De Kringwinkel hebben een verhaal, net als iedereen die bij ons in dienst is. De inkomsten uit onze verkoop gebruiken we om mensen die weinig of geen kansen hebben op de gewone arbeidsmarkt een passende job te geven. Zo doen ze terug ervaring op en krijgen terug ze een toekomstperspectief. De Kringwinkel stimuleert hergebruik
Tegelijk redden we zo een heleboel spullen van de afvalberg. Onze mensen ontvangen herbruikbare spullen of halen ze gratis op, sorteren of repareren ze en geven ze een mooi plaatsje in onze winkels. Wat levert dit op? Heel veel. In totaal zamelden we elk jaar zo’n 83.000 ton goederen in. Meer dan de helft hiervan vindt een nieuwe thuis via De Kringwinkel. Goed voor meer dan 5300 jobs.

Description
The ICF GHK Consulting was appointed by the European Commission to map social enterprises in the 28 Member States and in Switzerland.
The study follows up on the Social Business Initiative launched by the commission in 2011. It is based on existing academic materials and interviews with over 350 stakeholders across Europe.
Euricse is in charge of the coordination of the Quality Check Team (QCT), a team of five independent academics who provided methodological support, conducted peer reviews and reviewed the final report.
Objectives
The project aims at giving an overview of social enterprise ecosystem across countries, including factors constraning their development and at outlining national policy and legal frameworks for social enterprises, including best practices to accelerate the growth of the social enterprise ecosystem.
Main results
Throughout 2013 and 2014 the members of QCT (and among them Carlo Borzaga and Giulia Galera) participated in three seminars where they periodically reviewed the results of the research activities. The ICF GHK researchers, the member of the scientific committee, the functionaries of the EC and other external experts also participated to the periodic QCT review seminars.
The Synthesis report, the Executive summary and the country reports were published in 2015 by the European Commission.

This report by the Circular Jobs Initiative finds that combining the social and the circular economy agendas can facilitate an inclusive, just and safe labour market. Based on case studies of social enterprises and cooperatives engaged in circular activities, the report explores how the circular economy can benefit from integrating and collaborating with social economy organisations. While the social aspects of the circular economy remain underexplored, the social economy holds vital expertise that is needed to create the conditions, frameworks, and protections to ensure a just transition to circularity. The report provides recommendations for entrepreneurs, local and national policymakers to help them understand how they can be part of an ethical and inclusive circular economy.
