Locally produced food has to travel shorter, which means less fuel is consumed and less greenhouse gases are generated. Moreover, buying locally produced food helps local farmers and markets and creates more jobs in the local businesses.

Derive chemicals and fuels from organic waste matter, for example, wasted fats, grease and oils can be used for biodiesel production. Food waste such as corn starch and sugar cane can be used for PLA (Polylactic Acid) to replace plastic packaging, liquid fats and solid meat products can be used as raw materials in the rendering industry (animal food, cosmetics, soap, etc.).

The principles of a circular economy concern designing out waste, regenerating ecosystems and keeping items in use. Decoupling the economy from material flows—improving the rate of resource productivity faster than the economic growth rate—is also a consistent guide. By evolving with the growing number of applications of circular economy principles, and consolidating these strategies across thematic areas, Circle Economy’s Key Elements Framework (KE) renders the elements of the circular economy salient and serves as a basis to derive contextual strategies and interventions. 


The Framework consists of:
- Core Elements: Activities directly handling product or material flows; and uniquely,
- Enabling Elements: those that remove obstacles for core actors.

Circle Economy's framework of strategies and activities that define the circular economy

Based on the work of [Bocken et al. (2016)](https://www.researchgate.net/publication/309699661_Product_design_and_business_model_strategies_for_a_circular_economy), the Four Flows Framework serves as a simple framework for managing resource flows in a circular economy by using less (Narrow), using for longer (Slow), using again (Cycle), and using clean, regenerative materials and energy (Regenerate).

These different principles of circular economy can be applied to our socioeconomic metabolism: we can design stocks like buildings, infrastructure, machinery, and vehicles to be rich resource mines for the future, and design manufactured goods and consumables to be cycled and made regenerative. Furthermore, the focus must also centre on getting more value out of fewer materials. Achieving the aims of a circular economy—minimising material use, regenerating the Earth, and preventing material losses—can be done through these four key strategies mentioned above.

USB is made up of 69 farmer-directors who oversee the investments of the soybean checkoff on behalf of all U.S. 
soybean farmers. Checkoff funds are invested in the areas of animal utilization, human utilization, industrial utilization, 
industry relations, market access and supply. As stipulated in the Soybean Promotion, Research and Consumer 
Information Act, USDA™s Agricultural Marketing Service has oversight responsibilities for USB and the soybean checkoff.
Soy-Based Adhesives Provide Formaldehyde-Free Alternative for 
Interior Wood Products
While soy-based adhesives have been used in the manufacturing of wood products such as plywood for more 
than 70 years, environmental concerns and rising costs for 
petrochemical-based resins have renewed interest in these 
less toxic and more sustainable options. Consequently, 
Ashland Hercules Water Technologies™ development of 
a completely formulated soy adhesive for use in wood composites, including particleboard and medium density 
˜berboard, presents furniture manufacturers and consumers 
with a safer alternative for adhesives used in producing 
interior furniture.
Ashland™s line of Soyad adhesives contains no formaldehyde 
and low volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Typical interior 
wood products include urea formaldehyde (UF) in their 
adhesives. Over time, UF releases free formaldehyde into the air as a carcinogenic gaseous form, which 
can be inhaled by humans.Following recent legislation enacted to reduce formaldehyde emissions, the California Air Resources Board 
(CARB) adopted the United States™ strictest emissions standards. Soyad adhesives meet both CARB Phase 
2 standards and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) criteria, at a lower cost than other 
low-emitting alternatives. In recognition of utilizing renewable, natural soy ˚our with the principles of green 
chemistry, Ashland was jointly awarded the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency™s Presidential Green 
Chemistry Challenge Award along with Columbia Forest Products and Kaichang Li, Ph.D., of Oregon State 
University.
ﬁBy the end of 2007, we had converted all seven of our hardwood plywood plants from urea formaldehyde 
based adhesive systems to a soy-based formulation, and since then, we have produced over 60 million 
‚PureBond®™ hardwood plywood panels on a cost-neutral basis,ﬂ says Steve Pung, vice president of 
technology at Columbia Forest Products.
