World Circular Textiles Day takes place every year on 8th October.  Our vision is to galvanise the collective ambitions and goals of people, organisations and businesses to reach a fully circular textiles world by 2050. Our mission is to provide a framework for circularity stakeholders to develop and deliver a collaborative, evolving roadmap and to chart circularity’s momentum annually from the 8th of October until 2050.

What does fully circular by 2050 mean?
- Shared textile resources, in the form of products and raw materials, are kept in **continual circulation**.
- Virgin resources are **replaced with circular materials**.
- Dignity, equity, and equality for the **people** involved in all parts of the circular value chain.

We need to know where we stand today to chart how to get to 100% Circularity by 2050. What circular activity is currently happening in the textiles and apparel industry, and where in the world is it happening? The WCTD Collection aims to answer this question by building the world’s largest digital library of circular textiles case studies.

This collection features a selection of case studies, mainly based on the [2024 Circularity Gap Report](https://www.circularity-gap.world/2024). 

In this year’s Report, we shift from exploring the what to the how: exploring the different ways that we need to ‘change the rules of the game’ and create a set of conditions that discourage the overshoot of planetary boundaries and ‘undershoot’ of human development. This process has resulted in us spotlighting 12 of the original 16 solutions, highlighting the country profile that they are most relevant to, as well as placing people at the centre of this story for the first time. Based on extensive interviews and desk research, this Report aims to show governments and industry leaders that if they want to turn theory into action and scale an economy that delivers on needs within the safe limits of the planet, they need to dismantle harmful entrenched processes and align enabling elements.

Rampant material extraction is pushing the ecosystems of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) to their limits. Over 11% of global raw materials are extracted within the region, yet it represents only about 8% of the world's population.

[*The Circularity Gap Report* (CGR) Latin America and the Caribbean](https://www.circularity-gap.world/lac), a first of its kind, demonstrates how the region can leverage the circular economy to tackle systemic inefficiencies in satisfying societal needs, conserve its unique natural wealth, and improve its people’s well-being.

To devise pathways for a circular transition, the report analysed the sectors where circular interventions could yield the most positive impact—environmentally, economically, and socially. This entails shifting to a circular food system, building a circular built environment, advancing circular manufacturing, transforming the energy system, reducing waste generation, and improve waste cycling.

Products and services are designed for multiple use and material value retention, with maximum positive impact.

DETAIL: 
Imagine a time when…products flow via optimal collection and distribution streams into reusable and repairable product platforms. Reuse and access models are dominant, and products are designed for multiple recirculation before biodegrading (if designed to do so), or being broken down into reusable raw materials for production. People only consume what they need. Production and consumption wastes have been fully eliminated and multifunctional, season-less and timeless fashions are the norm, yet still fulfil our human need for expression and creativity without constraint. All business models, organisations, governments and citizens play a role in maintaining a healthy, functioning circular ecosystem.

Products and Services

Manufactured goods, such as vehicles, textiles, appliances and equipment and their associated production processes are big employers but:
- production processes often rely on fossil fuels and currently drive one-third of the overshoot on the climate change planetary boundary due to its GHG production, 
- material- and energy-intensive industrial activities are linked to deforestation and drive 15% on both the land use and freshwater planetary boundaries, 
- manufacturing goods results in substantial amounts of hazardous industrial waste and leaks chemicals into the environment.

The principles of a circular economy concern designing out waste, regenerating ecosystems and keeping items in use. Decoupling the economy from material flows—improving the rate of resource productivity faster than the economic growth rate—is also a consistent guide. By evolving with the growing number of applications of circular economy principles, and consolidating these strategies across thematic areas, Circle Economy’s Key Elements Framework (KE) renders the elements of the circular economy salient and serves as a basis to derive contextual strategies and interventions. 


The Framework consists of:
- Core Elements: Activities directly handling product or material flows; and uniquely,
- Enabling Elements: those that remove obstacles for core actors.

Circle Economy's framework of strategies and activities that define the circular economy

It is 2050.  Full systems change has taken place. This wouldn’t have been possible without the immediate action and radical steps taken from 2020 onwards. Many targets had to be identified in the early 2020s and achieved by 2030 to ensure that the 2050 goal happened in full. A sense of urgency, turbo stakeholder collaboration, supportive government regulation and clear, data driven targets enabled the mindsets and systems change needed to transform to a fully circular textiles ecosystem.

A circular economics model underpins what we have created. It reflects and supports a living organism made up of makers, users and restorers, interacting across vibrant and interconnected networks. Checks and balances, alongside transparency and accountability, ensure a healthy system. Financial, environmental, and social metrics have the purpose of serving communities and the planet. There is shared ownership of profit and loss – across all three metrics – throughout the value chain.

Based on the work of [Bocken et al. (2016)](https://www.researchgate.net/publication/309699661_Product_design_and_business_model_strategies_for_a_circular_economy), the Four Flows Framework serves as a simple framework for managing resource flows in a circular economy by using less (Narrow), using for longer (Slow), using again (Cycle), and using clean, regenerative materials and energy (Regenerate).

These different principles of circular economy can be applied to our socioeconomic metabolism: we can design stocks like buildings, infrastructure, machinery, and vehicles to be rich resource mines for the future, and design manufactured goods and consumables to be cycled and made regenerative. Furthermore, the focus must also centre on getting more value out of fewer materials. Achieving the aims of a circular economy—minimising material use, regenerating the Earth, and preventing material losses—can be done through these four key strategies mentioned above.

 Quase todo mundo tem em casa roupas para arrumar, à espera de um tempo para levá-las à costureira. Uma startup percebeu esta demanda no mercado e está conectando pessoas através de um aplicativo de costura delivery.
Pelo app SOS Costura, o cliente escolhe o local, dia e horário da visita. O aplicativo conecta o usuário à costureira mais próxima e mais bem avaliada. Ela vai até o cliente para tirar as medidas, cadastra os serviços e deixa agendada a data de entrega das peças, que é feita, em geral, de três a sete dias. O cliente também paga e avalia o serviço pela plataforma.
A startup, que iniciou sua operação em outubro de 2018, tem mais de mil costureiras cadastradas e concentra seus atendimentos em São Paulo, atuando em outras capitais e com planos de expansão para o Brasil.
Para salvar roupas e tempo 
O serviço traz comodidade, especialmente nas grandes cidades. A cliente Núbia Mota, head de marketing e novos negócios da Magento Commerce, conta que descobriu o app em uma semana em que precisou conciliar trabalho e preparativos para uma viagem.
“O app traz toda essa praticidade de eu não precisar me locomover, de estar no conforto da minha casa. Posso agendar o horário que for melhor para mim. Consegui pegar várias roupas que estavam paradas há muito tempo, queria levar muitas delas comigo, e consegui arrumar todas”, afirma Núbia.
Além de otimizar a rotina, a solução é uma alternativa para a padronização das peças vendidas no varejo. “Tenho este problema de comprar roupa e ter que fazer barra ou da blusa ficar muito larga mesmo comprando P, principalmente roupas de trabalho, que são pensadas para mulheres mais altas. Eu ficava com um monte de roupas paradas no guarda-roupa porque não tinha tempo de levar para arrumar”, conta.
O aplicativo tem valores tabelados e aplica descontos progressivos. E como o cliente está, geralmente, ao lado do armário durante a visita, acaba consertando mais itens. A partir de cinco serviços, uma barra de calça, por exemplo, custa R$16,90.
SOS para a profissão da costura  
Na versão do app direcionada à costureira, chamada de SOS Costura Empreendedor, a profissional define os dias e horários que estará disponível. “Somos tecnologia para pessoas. Trabalhamos para otimizar a rotina do cliente, dar mais tempo a ele, e impulsionar a progressão de renda da costureira. Ela tem autonomia e faz seus ganhos com a qualidade do seu trabalho”, afirma Luciano Mariani, CEO da startup.
A avaliação da profissional é feita pelo usuário, que qualifica os serviços e o atendimento. Há um ano no aplicativo, a costureira Tânia Fagundes conta que descobriu a plataforma em uma reportagem na TV e achou a ideia ótima. “As pessoas precisam muito de costureira, mas ficam com receio de chamar uma dentro de sua casa. O SOS Costura dá essa segurança.”
Uma das pioneiras no app, a costureira Isabel Pereira conheceu o aplicativo buscando na internet um trabalho para exercer em casa. “Eu estava cuidando da minha mãe, ela estava bem doente. Então, eu achei a SOS Costura. Para mim, foi um presentão.”
Depois dos dois primeiros pedidos, ela já estava adaptada ao que chamou de “desafio digital” e fala que o app trouxe independência. “Hoje, eu trabalho só com costura, não preciso ter outra atividade. Descobrir o aplicativo foi o trampolim para fazer o que eu gosto, eu busquei isso a vida inteira. ”
Para atuar pelo app, a costureira ter deve ter experiência, maquinário e espaço organizado. Isabel destaca as vantagens do aplicativo para a profissão. “Não preciso ir buscar o meu cliente. Não tenho que me preocupar com orçamento, está tudo precificado. A vida está muito prática, e com o app eu me preocupo somente com meu trabalho.”
Tecnologia para novos tempos 
“As costureiras seguem os protocolos de higiene e as pessoas preferem evitar locais cheios, provadores apertados e se locomover. O serviço de costura se torna mais fácil, acessível e seguro com o app”, aponta Luciano Mariani, CEO da SOS Costura, que percebeu nos últimos meses um aumento da demanda.
Em tempos nos quais a moda também está sendo repensada, o app também oferece o benefício de colaborar com a sustentabilidade.  cliente Núbia Mota reflete. “Tem muita gente entendendo que não precisa ter muita roupa, que pode reformar. Acho que muito mais do que facilidade, o app traz benefícios agregados. Mais do que nunca, oferece um serviço com propósito de sustentabilidade.”

  A tecnologia tem dado fôlego a muita profissão tradicional que perdeu espaço para a industrialização. Uma delas é a da costureira.     Para que não tem tempo, surgiu o aplicativo que leva o serviço até a casa do cliente.     Se para uma simples entrevista ninguém tem tempo, imagina para levar roupa numa costureira?     Agora não tem mais desculpa. Já tem costureira que vai até a sua casa. A Josiane, por exemplo, não tem tempo de pregar um botão. Contratou o serviço da Isabel pelo aplicativo no celular.     Josiane Carvalho conta como encontrou o serviço. “Sem querer achei no site que compra os apps e resolvi testar.”     Isabel Cristina Reis, costureira, conta que tem muita demanda. "Muito. Tem vezes que tenho que cancelar visitas porque a gente não consegue dar conta.”     A App da Costureira foi criado em outubro de 2018 com investimento de R$ 20 mil. O empresário Alexandre Coutinho é um dos sócios no negócio. Ele conta que a ideia partiu do amigo Luciano, que um dia precisou de um ajuste na roupa para ir a um casamento e não achava costureira.     “Começamos a fazer trabalho de pesquisa de mercado pra ver se tinha nicho de trabalho com essa necessidade e identificamos que tinha mercado têxtil grande, tem mercado de ajuste e reforma gigante e não tinha uma solução mobile", explica Alexandre.     O app atende, por enquanto, a região da Grande São Paulo e tem 130 profissionais cadastrados. O cliente baixa o aplicativo e solicita uma visita com 15 horas de antecedência. Ele busca um profissional num raio de 5 km do endereço. 80% do valor do serviço fica com a costureira, 20% é comissão da startup. Se precisar levar a roupa, a costureira agenda a entrega.     O ticket médio é de R$180. A Isabel está feliz e faturando até R$2500 por mês.     “Tem gente que pede pra por botão? Pede. hoje tem que ser tudo rápido, não tem tempo. E eu estou aqui pra isso", completa a costureira.     Saiba o que é marketing digital     Você sabe o que é marketing digital? O consultor Altair Camargo explica. “Marketing digital são todas as ações que uma empresa ou um negócio fazem online, fazem na internet. Isso envolve estar nas redes sociais, envolve ter um site, mandar e-mail, esse tipo de ação online.”     No mundo dos negócios de hoje é quase uma obrigação.     “As buscas pelos produtos, pelos serviços são feitas online. Se a loja não tem uma rede social, se a empresa não tem uma rede social, não está online, ela vai deixando de existir", explica Camargo.     Onde usar? Primeiro descubra como o seu cliente se comporta no mundo virtual.     Como usar o marketing digital? Nunca misture o pessoal com o profissional.     Fora da caixa: avalie sempre se a estratégia está funcionando. Foque em criar conteúdo interessante para o cliente. Resíduo têxtil não é lixo, é matéria prima!Várias ações vêm sendo realizadas com o propósito de reduzir matérias primas têxteis destinadas aos aterros sanitários desde 2015 pela profª Francisca Dantas Mendes e seus alunos pesquisadores. Com o apoio de autoridades políticas, o projeto tem buscado contatos junto aos órgãos públicos do município de São Paulo com o objetivo de viabilizar seus propósitos. Sabendo que os resíduos descartados nas calçadas são, por circunstâncias, dos catadores, como possibilidade de geração de renda, foram desenvolvidas propostas para beneficiar a população em extrema vulnerabilidade social.Reuniões com a AMLURB desde junho de 2017 e visitas ao transbordo da empresa LOGA, encarregada da coleta de lixo no município de São Paulo foram efetivadas no mesmo período. Esforços foram envidados para criar e realizar eventos e encontros atraindo a sociedade civil, associações e órgão públicos para divulgar as proposições do NAP SUSTEXMODA e discutir suas viabilidades.Os participantes do NAP SUSTEXMODA decidiram criar o Residômetro, instrumento que visa publicar, a partir do dia 15/09/2017, os enormes volumes de resíduos têxteis acumulados diariamente nos aterros sanitários da cidade. Essa data, que inaugura o início dos trabalhos efetivos do projeto, parte de dados informados pela empresa LOGA com base em suas estimativas empíricas.Assim, no dia 15/09/2017, a LOGA forneceu o volume médio aproximado dos resíduos têxteis coletados por dia. Foram 10 toneladas de roupas pós-consumo descartadas nas calçadas do bairro da Vila Maria, mais 36 toneladas de resíduos originados, principalmente, dos departamentos de corte das empresas de confecção de roupas dos bairros do Brás e Bom Retiro.Assim, o Residômetro foi concebido e desenvolvido da seguinte forma:Para o cálculo acumulado, foram considerados todos os dias úteis contados de 15/09/2017 até os dias de hoje.De 15/09/2017 até 17/03/2020, foram computadas 36 toneladas de resíduos e 10 de roupas.De 18/03/2020 a 30/11/2020, a LOGA avaliou que houve uma redução de 40% do material coletado em vista do confinamento da sociedade imposto pela pandemia da Covid 19. As empresas de confecção, conforme anúncio em suas portas, passaram a vender somente on-line e por WhatsApp. Houve uma redução, mas a produção não parou e a Feira da Madruga (evento destinado a venda diária de roupas populares), do bairro do Brás não parou de funcionar.De 01/12/2020 até os dias atuais, a informação é de que a redução, em relação aos dados iniciais, foi de 15%, indicando uma recuperação parcial das atividades do setor têxtil local.A partir de 25/05/2021 os dados atualizados pela LOGA revelam que são coletados diariamente, pelos caminhões, 20 toneladas de roupas pós-consumo e 35 toneladas de resíduos.
