World Circular Textiles Day takes place every year on 8th October.  Our vision is to galvanise the collective ambitions and goals of people, organisations and businesses to reach a fully circular textiles world by 2050. Our mission is to provide a framework for circularity stakeholders to develop and deliver a collaborative, evolving roadmap and to chart circularity’s momentum annually from the 8th of October until 2050.

What does fully circular by 2050 mean?
- Shared textile resources, in the form of products and raw materials, are kept in **continual circulation**.
- Virgin resources are **replaced with circular materials**.
- Dignity, equity, and equality for the **people** involved in all parts of the circular value chain.

We need to know where we stand today to chart how to get to 100% Circularity by 2050. What circular activity is currently happening in the textiles and apparel industry, and where in the world is it happening? The WCTD Collection aims to answer this question by building the world’s largest digital library of circular textiles case studies.

Rampant material extraction is pushing the ecosystems of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) to their limits. Over 11% of global raw materials are extracted within the region, yet it represents only about 8% of the world's population.

[*The Circularity Gap Report* (CGR) Latin America and the Caribbean](https://www.circularity-gap.world/lac), a first of its kind, demonstrates how the region can leverage the circular economy to tackle systemic inefficiencies in satisfying societal needs, conserve its unique natural wealth, and improve its people’s well-being.

To devise pathways for a circular transition, the report analysed the sectors where circular interventions could yield the most positive impact—environmentally, economically, and socially. This entails shifting to a circular food system, building a circular built environment, advancing circular manufacturing, transforming the energy system, reducing waste generation, and improve waste cycling.

Imagine a time when…the raw materials that are used to make things are sourced from existing products and regenerative agriculture, via carbon negative and climate neutral processes. Biodegradable raw materials are used for products with biodegradable end routes. Toxic chemicals have been washed out of the global materials pool, disposed of safely and replaced with beneficial alternatives. Virgin fibres made from fossil fuels have been banned, while secondary synthetic fibres, derived from what was already in the system, are kept in constant circulation as a resource. Circularity accounting methods, built on science-based metrics, help to manage a balanced system of resources, across all industries, and in line with the planet’s environmental limits.

Imagine a time when…products flow via optimal collection and distribution streams into reusable and repairable product platforms. Reuse and access models are dominant, and products are designed for multiple recirculation before biodegrading (if designed to do so), or being broken down into reusable raw materials for production. People only consume what they need. Production and consumption wastes have been fully eliminated and multifunctional, season-less and timeless fashions are the norm, yet still fulfil our human need for expression and creativity without constraint. All business models, organisations, governments and citizens play a role in maintaining a healthy, functioning circular ecosystem.

The principles of a circular economy concern designing out waste, regenerating ecosystems and keeping items in use. Decoupling the economy from material flows—improving the rate of resource productivity faster than the economic growth rate—is also a consistent guide. By evolving with the growing number of applications of circular economy principles, and consolidating these strategies across thematic areas, Circle Economy’s Key Elements Framework (KE) renders the elements of the circular economy salient and serves as a basis to derive contextual strategies and interventions.

Whilst no two countries are the same, there are still obvious similarities between some of them, with discernible development patterns and parallels in evidence. Common problems and shared solutions help place unique country identities and individual issues in context.

Whilst this classification is far from clear-cut and exhibits some overlap, it does underline how the discourse on transitioning to a circular economy needs to account for both differences and commonalities, if we are to arrive at a more strategic and instructive analysis. It also allows to highlight a set of key themes that are likely to be central to the countries that fall under the respective profiles.

A framework to distinguish between different country profiles and their circular transition needs.

It is 2050.  Full systems change has taken place. This wouldn’t have been possible without the immediate action and radical steps taken from 2020 onwards. Many targets had to be identified in the early 2020s and achieved by 2030 to ensure that the 2050 goal happened in full. A sense of urgency, turbo stakeholder collaboration, supportive government regulation and clear, data driven targets enabled the mindsets and systems change needed to transform to a fully circular textiles ecosystem.

A circular economics model underpins what we have created. It reflects and supports a living organism made up of makers, users and restorers, interacting across vibrant and interconnected networks. Checks and balances, alongside transparency and accountability, ensure a healthy system. Financial, environmental, and social metrics have the purpose of serving communities and the planet. There is shared ownership of profit and loss – across all three metrics – throughout the value chain.

The Circular City Actions Framework provides urban changemakers with five complementary strategies they can use to start working towards a more circular system. 

The framework is action-based to provide users with concrete strategic directions and showcase the desired outcomes of each strategy. 
The framework consists of five complementary **strategies**, under which **sub-strategies** provide further detail. Finally, each sub-strategy consists of a diversity of tangible **solutions** which are framed in relation to key thematic areas.

Based on the ongoing ISO standardisation process, a taxonomy has been defined under which to cluster indicators to measure circularity.

A positive transition to circularity for work and workers must be underpinned by three core pillars.

This is a survey that dives into understanding the policy environment around specific circular solutions. 

The survey is divided into five sections, based on the five key elements of the Circular Cities Action Framework. 
Each section asks 2-3 questions to explore which policies may or may not be present within your city to support a transition towards a circular economy.

Ecocitex nace el 2020, al comprar una antigua hilandería para poder procesar ropa en mal estado, con el sueño de eliminar el desecho textil de Chile. Para lograr esto acopiamos ropa en desuso para transformarla en hilado de ropa reciclada. Este proceso es posible gracias al conocimiento de nuestros trabajadores que llevan años de experiencia en este oficio y con la ayuda de mujeres en proceso de re inserción social, a quienes estamos capacitando en esta labor. Para comercializar nuestro hilado empezamos a vincularnos principalmente con mujeres emprendedoras con quienes logramos crear una gran red de puntos de venta a lo largo de Chile, con la cual vamos aprendiendo, generando ideas de productos y creciendo en comunidad.En nuestro primer año, a pesar de las dificultades del COVID, logramos obtener la marca Chile, nos ganamos un Corfo de Innovación y el premio de emprender con impacto de Latinoamérica de Mayma y Mercado Libre, dándonos más fuerzas para seguir innovando.Estos reconocimientos generaron que más personas conocieran nuestro proyecto, por lo que empezamos a recibir más ropa y mucha de esta en buen estado, por lo que ideamos la forma de vender y donarla, para evitar reciclar ropa que se puede reutilizar y poder ayudar a más personas.El 2021 nos certificamos Empresa B pendiente e ingresamos a un programa de apoyo a emprendimiento de Nesst y IKEA. Ahora el desafío es certificarnos como una Empresa B y utilizar las herramientas de este programa, para seguir creciendo en los productos ya creados y lograr desarrollar línea de productos de textil rescatado y confeccionados con nuestro hilado, para poder dar fuente de ingresos a más personas, en especial microempresaria y mujeres en reinserción social, que los puedan confeccionar desde sus hogares.Siempre con un norte claro: eliminar el desecho textil de Chile, generando un gran aporte social y medioambiental en el proceso.

    La empresa, que tiene por finalidad eliminar todos los desechos textiles en Chile, se hace cargo de la ropa que no está en condiciones de ser reutilizada y la transforma en este producto de alta calidad. Con la ayuda de mujeres ex privadas de libertad, logran aislar los broches, etiquetas y botones para separar ese descarte textil por color. En ciertos casos, ese hilado ha servido para que otra empresa confeccione frazadas, cojines, mantas y todo tipo de productos de dormitorio.
   Cristian González Farfán2020-10-22T17:49:28-03:00  	    La historia de Ecocitex es reciente, por lo que requiere ser contada con algunos antecedentes. En tanto fundadora de Travieso, empresa que reutiliza la ropa infantil en desuso, Rosario Hevia siempre quedaba con un descarte textil que no podía rescatar por más esfuerzos que hiciera. Lo suyo era recibir todo tipo de ropa infantil, “independiente de la marca y del estado, incluso ropa o manchada, lo cual es bastante diferenciador. En otras partes reciben solo ropa de marca; nosotros, como tenemos una visión sustentable, nos hacemos cargo de toda la ropa infantil”, indica Hevia.
Como parte de sus políticas sociales, Travieso dona el tercio de su ropa a niños y niñas en condiciones de vulnerabilidad. Otro porcentaje queda convertido en accesorios infantiles o juegos, para tratar de aprovechar al máximo todo el material textil antes de que caigan a la basura.
“En Travieso una vez generamos cinco kilos de basura textil y lo convertimos de forma manual en ecorrelleno, traperos que usamos en la tienda. El problema es que todo esto era de una forma muy poco industrial”, dice Rosario, quien empezó a elucubrar ideas para dotar de completa circularidad a su propuesta.
Septiembre fue un mes clave. Por esas fechas logró juntar en Travieso entre 400 y 450 kilos de ropa en pésimo estado, con alto porcentaje de algodón y poliester. Trató de hacer trapillos y ecorrellenos nuevamente. Consultó con empresa y barajó distintas alternativas. Todo empezó a cambiar cuando descubrió que había una hilandería que quizás podía procesar toda esa “basura textil” y darle un nuevo uso. Las máquinas de esa vieja hilandería de los años sesenta fabricaba lana procesada a partir de vellones de lana de oveja. El problema era que la lana era escasa, por causa de las importaciones de acrílico, por lo que el mercado se hacía más competitivo.
“Logramos sacar en prueba un hilado de textil reciclado en prueba. En Travieso le fue súper bien. 400 kilos de hilado se vendieron en una semana. La gente estaba maravillada, por lo disruptivo”, explica Rosario Hevia.
Volvió en octubre para seguir haciendo pruebas, pero se topó con una información que truncó su sueño: la hilandería estaba quebrada, ya que para poder ser sustentable económicamente necesitaba un volumen mucho mayor de materia primera. Cinco toneladas por lo menos.  
     Con la quiebra, Rosario Hevia visualizó una oportunidad. Así, en diciembre entró en una carrera para encontrar inversionistas y, junto a otros socios, logró comprar la hilandería para fundar Ecocitex. Rosario es una de las socias, siendo cinco en total, pero “cada uno tiene su propio emprendimiento independiente”. Explica que Travieso sigue siendo uno de los mejores puntos: todo los meses entrega a Ecocitex ropa en mal estado y compra hilado que venden en las tiendas de Travieso para cerrar el proceso de economía circular.
Una de las primeras donaciones que recibió Ecocitex fue de la empresa Ripley, quien ha entregado en total casi 20 mil prendas para convertirlas en hilado reciclado, divididas en uniformes de colegio antiguos y otros textiles. Del mismo modo, a partir de la alianza con Ripley, la empresa ANDE logró confeccionar implementos de dormitorio como cojines, mantas, cubrecamas y frazadas usando el hilado reciclado como materia prima secundaria.
De esta manera, Ripley también recibe en sus tiendas el hilado reciclado de Ecocitex y los productos de cama elaborados por ANDES a partir del hilo de Ecocitex. En total, dice Andrea Oyarce, subgerenta de marcas internacionales y proyectos sostenibles, Ripley ha recibido en sus tiendas 17.500 unidades, divididas en hilado y productos terminados.
“Nosotros queríamos hacer algo inteligente que pudiera tener una segunda vía que va en linea con nuestra mirada de construir un ecosistema circular”, agrega Oyarce.
Hevia, en tanto, valora el trabajo que logró realizar con ANDES porque al principio “nuestro hilado no era de muy buena calidad”, y a partir de los productos de cama confeccionados “nos ayudaron a mejorar la calidad, a ganar experiencia, a poner énfasis en el tema de la torsión para que sea un hilado resistente”.  
“El reciclaje se percibe como un producto de menor calidad y, por lo tanto, debe tener un menor costo. Pero no es así: implica mucha mano de obra, es mucho más caro que el costo de un hilado importado de características técnicas similares. Se podría hacer, pero implicaría pagarles menos a mis trabajadores, y eso no lo haré porque es un emprendimiento ético”.Rosario Hevia, socia de Ecocitex.      
   Lo importante para Hevia es que Ecocitex sigue trabajando bajo los principios de comercio ético y sueldo justo, logrando así un triple impacto económico, social y ambiental que conforman el manual de las empresas que fomentan la economía circular.
Con respecto a Travieso, lo que cambió en Ecocitex es que ahora también recibe ropa adulta en la hilandería adquirida. “Por eso es que decimos que queremos eliminar todo desecho textil en Chile”, acota Hevia. En línea con Travieso, Ecocitex trata de reutilizar todo lo posible o donar a otras empresas a partir de alianzas con otros emprendimientos o instituciones. Y lo que definitivamente no se puede reutilizar, se destina al hilado.
Para ello cuenta con el trabajo de la corporación Abriendo Puertas, en la que participan mujeres ex privadas de libertad que ayudan a retirar lo no textil (botones, cierres, etiquetas). Luego separan el textil por colores y se fabrica el hilado. Es importante consignar que todo el proceso se hace en Chile”, complementa Rosario Hevia.
Según explica la emprendedora, montar este proyecto, incluido comprar la hilandería, trae muchos costos asociados, por lo que no ha sido fácil mantenerse en pie. Mantener la hilandería operativa cuesta más de 30 millones mensuales. Encima, ha logrado abrir una línea para, gracias a la gestación de nuevas alianzas, ir a retirar la ropa en desuso a domicilio. Por eso es que Rosario invita a los clientes a atreverse a tejer con este hilado reciclado.
Además, conspira contra Ecocitex otra creencia injustificada: que lo reciclado per se debería ser más barato. Rosario lo desmiente por completo y por eso valida que el producto sea un poco más caro, sea una línea premium.
