This collection has been built by a community of passionate researchers, students, and industry professionals as part of <a href="https://worldcirculartextilesday.com/" target="_blank">World Circular Textiles Day</a> (WCTD). 


World Circular Textiles Day takes place every year on 8th October.  Our vision is to galvanise the collective ambitions and goals of people, organisations and businesses to reach a fully circular textiles world by 2050. Our mission is to provide a framework for circularity stakeholders to develop and deliver a collaborative, evolving roadmap and to chart circularity’s momentum annually from the 8th of October until 2050.

What does fully circular by 2050 mean?
- Shared textile resources, in the form of products and raw materials, are kept in **continual circulation**.
- Virgin resources are **replaced with circular materials**.
- Dignity, equity, and equality for the **people** involved in all parts of the circular value chain.

We need to know where we stand today to chart how to get to 100% Circularity by 2050. What circular activity is currently happening in the textiles and apparel industry, and where in the world is it happening? The WCTD Collection aims to answer this question by building the world’s largest digital library of circular textiles case studies.

Imagine a time when…products flow via optimal collection and distribution streams into reusable and repairable product platforms. Reuse and access models are dominant, and products are designed for multiple recirculation before biodegrading (if designed to do so), or being broken down into reusable raw materials for production. People only consume what they need. Production and consumption wastes have been fully eliminated and multifunctional, season-less and timeless fashions are the norm, yet still fulfil our human need for expression and creativity without constraint. All business models, organisations, governments and citizens play a role in maintaining a healthy, functioning circular ecosystem.

Imagine a time when…people and communities are at the heart of any sustainable and circular system. The planet thrives, enabling us to survive with balance and abundance. People are no longer passive consumers, but proactive participants. The ‘makers’ who design, build, reprocess and recirculate products throughout the value chain are treated equally and are equitable partners in shaping and benefitting from the system. Textiles/garments can be produced and repurposed locally as well as centrally. A blend of craft methods alongside more automated production provides regionalised, multi-faceted perspectives and fulfilling livelihoods, be they high- or low-tech. Wealth gaps are minimised and dignity, equity, equality is a reality for all.

People and Society

Slow strategies aim to keep materials in use for as long as possible, for example through design for durability and repairability. A more circular economy is also a slower one: materials, components, and products—and even buildings and infrastructure—that we lock in stocks are made to last. This will lower material demand in the long run, in essence also serving to narrow resource flows.

The principles of a circular economy concern designing out waste, regenerating ecosystems and keeping items in use. Decoupling the economy from material flows—improving the rate of resource productivity faster than the economic growth rate—is also a consistent guide. By evolving with the growing number of applications of circular economy principles, and consolidating these strategies across thematic areas, Circle Economy’s Key Elements Framework (KE) renders the elements of the circular economy salient and serves as a basis to derive contextual strategies and interventions. 


The Framework consists of:
- Core Elements: Activities directly handling product or material flows; and uniquely,
- Enabling Elements: those that remove obstacles for core actors.

Circle Economy's framework of strategies and activities that define the circular economy

It is 2050.  Full systems change has taken place. This wouldn’t have been possible without the immediate action and radical steps taken from 2020 onwards. Many targets had to be identified in the early 2020s and achieved by 2030 to ensure that the 2050 goal happened in full. A sense of urgency, turbo stakeholder collaboration, supportive government regulation and clear, data driven targets enabled the mindsets and systems change needed to transform to a fully circular textiles ecosystem.

A circular economics model underpins what we have created. It reflects and supports a living organism made up of makers, users and restorers, interacting across vibrant and interconnected networks. Checks and balances, alongside transparency and accountability, ensure a healthy system. Financial, environmental, and social metrics have the purpose of serving communities and the planet. There is shared ownership of profit and loss – across all three metrics – throughout the value chain.

Based on the work of [Bocken et al. (2016)](https://www.researchgate.net/publication/309699661_Product_design_and_business_model_strategies_for_a_circular_economy), the Four Flows Framework serves as a simple framework for managing resource flows in a circular economy by using less (Narrow), using for longer (Slow), using again (Cycle), and using clean, regenerative materials and energy (Regenerate).

These different principles of circular economy can be applied to our socioeconomic metabolism: we can design stocks like buildings, infrastructure, machinery, and vehicles to be rich resource mines for the future, and design manufactured goods and consumables to be cycled and made regenerative. Furthermore, the focus must also centre on getting more value out of fewer materials. Achieving the aims of a circular economy—minimising material use, regenerating the Earth, and preventing material losses—can be done through these four key strategies mentioned above.

 Why I started the business By Sian Rowlands, CEO and Chief Storyteller  Hi, I'm Sian and I'm a recovered shopaholic.   My story actually started with a bad habit….I used to be a bit of a shopaholic! Just over 8 years ago, I realised I was broke so decided to rent out my spare room to a friend, but before doing so I needed to clear out the wardrobes and as such ended up with 4 packing boxes full of great condition clothes – a lot of them still with their original tags on them.  When I calculated how much lost money was folded away in those boxes having never been worn I suddenly understood why I was broke.  In fact, I was quite shocked and a little ashamed of myself and of how much money I had wasted.  So I looked to the local market for somewhere I could sell all these pieces, but couldn’t find anything that properly fit the bill.  I knew I wasn’t the only woman in Dubai who was in this situation, so after a bit of research, I wrote a business plan and the company was born!  Straight away I knew I was onto a good idea because there was so much demand for the service and the events, and within the first 6 months I won two business awards and a small grant.   Originally, my sisters and I had called the business My Ex Wardrobe, which had caught on really well, and for the first few years we organised and hosted regular pop-up-shop parties at bars and restaurants around Dubai, where money-savvy women came to shop pre-loved fashion from their favourite high-street brands, designers and luxury labels.    After a several years of the side hustle, I realised that the business needed more input than just my spare time. I wanted to deliver a bigger, better version of the concept. So I decided to make a change, and began looking for an investor.  As chance would have it, whilst I was on holiday trekking in the Himalayas (as one does to take a much needed ‘relaxing’ break!), I met Adam, a corporate lawyer from New Zealand who loved the sound of the business and my vision for the future.  Adam wanted to get involved and help grow the business, so that trip ended up being life-changing in more ways than one.  After many hours brainstorming, much research, deliberation and testing, the new brand, RETOLD was brought to life.    Part of my mission with Retold is to make the world a better place, starting with the UAE.  We need to change the collective mindset of our society.  We all seem addicted to ‘consuming’ and ‘buying’ and we have become dependent on items that are ‘throw away’ – like single-use plastics, fast fashion, electronics that become obsolete as soon as the next model is released.  So many of the products we spend our money on are no longer made to last so that we might simply buy new ones over and over again.  It is this mindset, we at Retold are trying to help change.  By giving ‘consumers’ an option to shop pre-owned, quality goods in a city obsessed with the ‘new’ and the ‘shiny’, we are empowering our customers to embrace a new and fabulous way to consume.  By buying pre-owned, our fashion consumers are diverting textile waste from landfills, but more importantly they are reducing their demand on fast fashion and newly created, ‘throw away’ fashion. Even better - they are making their hard earned money go further which helps promote a healthy economy.     One of the things we’ve had to do over the last several years is educate the market about what we offer, and find our community that supports the initiative.  We’ve done a lot of hard work to ensure that pre-owned fashion is no longer seen as something belonging in musty thrifts shops rammed full of grotty and out-of-date granny blouses.  Globally, we’re seeing a noticeable shift in the fashion industry with the rise in popularity of ‘resale’ instead of ‘retail’.  Locally, there’s decreasing desire to trawl the mall, limited to the same selection as everyone else; style seekers want to find unique options to put together one-of-a-kind looks.  And if they can make their money go further… it’s an all-round win!   So to summarise my ‘why’ for the business, I have to admit, it has changed over the years.  It started as a ‘bright idea to fill a gap in the market’ because I noticed a pain-point for many ladies around me.  Over the years as I discovered the multitude of benefits of buying and selling pre-owned fashion. It’s the TV show that changed the way we thought about fashion. And it’s back – well, almost. And Just Like That, the follow-up to Sex And the City, is set to make a return to the small screen this autumn. And while the actual release date of the first episode – which famously reunites Carrie, Charlotte, and Miranda, but not Samantha – is yet to be confirmed, what is certain is that every SATC fan worldwide will be OBSESSED with the minutiae of everything they wear 23 years after we first met them and fell in fashion love. Navigating New York City as 50-somethings (with a variety of partners/kids/baggage in tow according to behind-the-scenes snaps), Manhattan’s most famous friend group may well be older and wiser, but they’re no less fashion-obsessed than before. But if you shop for others, you need to think about what will work, what will look good on your clients, and what style you want to convey. Getting older, however, didn’t change the way I dress. Society expects women to hide their ageing bodies – what is totally acceptable for a 20-year-old girl (showing legs or shoulders, for example) becomes more and more ‘ridiculous’ or ‘shameless’ as she ages. Youth is prized, wrinkly knees and bat wings not so much. It’s very sad because getting older is wonderful. Being faithful to your style and who you are, dressing the way you feel like? That is important. What’s your take onon sustainable style choices?Sustainability has always been a concern and, as a buyer, I do take responsibility. We curate brands that work ethically – some because they are supporting women with financial independence in small communities, others because they chose to use ecological materials. As the market slowly opens to these values, we started scouting for green brands and recently introduced collabs with 100% ecological and vegan brands.What’s your ultimate style no-no?I have three. Classic leather handbags – especially those with ostentatious branding or logos all over – worn in the elbow crease are a bad idea. You can’t pretend you have something important or meaningful to do when you have a pink leather bag hanging from your elbow, nor can you look cool with your arm perpetually bent at a 90-degree angle. ‘French’ manicures are not French and look tacky. Adding a sustainable edge to fashion, the contemporary boutique boasts an array of formerly owned designer and high street clothes.

Stay on top of regional trends by perusing Retold’s glamorous array of pre-owned fashion clothing and accessories. On its shelves, customers will find everything from popular high-street brands to luxury label treasures such as Diane von Furstenberg, Stella McCartney, Christian Louboutin, Jimmy Choo, and many other lust-worthy design houses.

2017 was a busy year behind the scenes for the business side of Retold, kick started by a new investor joining the team after a very serendipitous meeting on the slopes of Mount Everest!  Founder and CEO decided that with this new lease on life (business!) deserved a sleek new brand name and aesthetic, and upgraded the business model with a substantial brick and mortar retail space.

Joining quirky boutiques and avant-garde outlets on Umm Suqeim Road, Retold will join a neighbourhood tribe of creative concepts. Opening the doors to its 3000 square foot retail space for the first time, customers can bask in the leafy courtyard at its January 2018 grand opening week of fashion and lifestyle activities.
Spanning across two levels, Retold’s founder and CEO – Sian Rowlands – flaunts her interior design skills by personally designing the boutique. By using raw materials and a minimalistic vibe, the huge array of products steals the spotlight at Retold.

Tuning into the growing love for online shopping, Retold’s aisles can be virtually browsed at its glam new website – ShopRETOLD.com. Shoppers will have access to a fabulous range of 10,000+ unique pieces from the comfort of their home. Delivery will be available within the UAE to start, with International Delivery options being launched in the near future.
Feeding Dubai’s passion for fashion, Retold intends to remain conscious of the enormous waste that sadly dominates the fashion industry. It hopes to create ripples in the local fashion market, with a mission to spark intrigue and conversation among fashion enthusiasts.
