Emilia Romagna regional strategy for reducing the impact of plastics on the environment

The region of Emilia Romagna, Italy, has approved a plan in 2019, PlasticFreER, to reduce plastic usage. The plan creates a shared strategy for public bodies, businesses, trade unions, associations and the scientific community to eliminate disposable plastics from offices, festivals, cafeterias and parties. It also aims to facilitate cleanups of public spaces as well as rivers and beaches. The plan eventually hopes to result in a gradual shift to environmentally friendly materials only—with one exception for medical products. The regional government has provided funds and incentives for companies that produce single-use plastic to switch to alternative materials; two million euros have been poured into the project from 2019-2020, with resources to increase in the coming years. The plan is relatively young and thus tangible results have not yet been recorded.
