SECONTRADE is a digital business-to-business platform that connects vendors and buyers across Europe interested in trading secondary raw materials. The reuse of secondary raw materials diverts resources from landfill, consequently increasing the security of supply, reducing energy use, mitigating impacts on climate and the environment and reducing overall manufacturing costs. While the trade of secondary raw materials has encountered past barriers—such as trading across borders within the EU and varied quality standards—SECONTRADE has simplified the process through a system that promises speed, traceability and transparency. Vendors, after initially uploading certificates and company data, can easily upload their available materials (such as ferrous metals, non-ferrous metals, plastics and glass) to pass onwards to buyers. The platform was founded in 2018, and has been lauded for its transparent and secure marketplace, and particularly that it allows users to buy and sell goods across national borders. To date, about 24.5 thousand tonnes of secondary raw materials have been offered on SECONTRADE.
