Greening the transportation sector is crucial, but it often takes a backseat to renewable energy generation. 64 percent of Costa Rica’s greenhouse gas emissions come from energy use, and more than two thirds of those come from transport. The country tries to address this by expanding public transport, but promoting cleaner individual vehicles also will be important. Vehicle ownership is soaring in Costa Rica. To promote this transition, the government proposed financial incentives for the adoption of electric vehicles. They believe that Costa Rica is ideally placed for this, as the country is relatively small and a lot of infrastructure is in place or easily adoptable.
