Kite-based wind energy

Offshore wind energy is currently being used with stationary wind turbines. However, these cannot be installed in deep water, meaning that hundreds of millions of people living in windy areas cannot access wind energy. Makani develops a kite-based system that can be used in deep water, as the kite can be deployed from a swimming buoy instead of a turbine fixed to the ground. It can also use more existing infrastructure, as it can be deployed from ports without a need for specialised equipment. Ultimately, Makani’s system should be cost-competitive with existing technologies throughout all markets.
