The Ministry of Education (MoE) in Oman has initiated the Green Schools project to integrate circular economy principles into the educational framework. This initiative aims to cultivate environmental awareness and sustainable practices among students and educators, thereby contributing to the nation's sustainable development goals outlined in Oman Vision 2040. The project encompasses three main areas: knowledge acquisition, skill development, and fostering positive environmental attitudes. The Green Schools project exemplifies Oman's commitment to fostering a circular economy through education, empowering the younger generation to adopt and advocate for sustainable practices.

Problem

Oman faces environmental challenges, including waste management issues and resource depletion. A significant contributing factor is the lack of environmental awareness and education among the younger population, leading to unsustainable practices and behaviours. Addressing this educational gap is crucial for promoting a circular economy and achieving long-term environmental sustainability.

Solution

The MoE launched the Green Schools project to embed environmental education within the school curriculum. Key components include: (1) Knowledge Field: Providing comprehensive information on environmental issues, sustainability concepts, circular economy, and green economy. (2) Skill Field: Enhancing cognitive and manual skills through practical activities related to environmental conservation and sustainable practices. (3) Developing Positive Trends Towards the Environment: Instilling values and attitudes that encourage proactive environmental stewardship among students.

Outcome

The Green Schools project has led to increased environmental awareness among students and educators, fostering a culture of sustainability within the educational community. By engaging in hands-on projects, students develop practical skills and a sense of responsibility towards environmental conservation. The initiative also strengthens collaboration between schools, government entities, private sector partners, and local communities, creating a unified approach to promoting the circular economy.

Additional information

The project aligns with Oman Vision 2040, which emphasizes sustainable development and environmental preservation. Funding and support for the Green Schools project are provided by various stakeholders, including be'ah (Oman Environmental Services Holding Company), Nama Group, Daleel Petroleum Company, Vodafone, and Oman LNG. These partnerships enhance the project's reach and effectiveness, ensuring the integration of circular economy concepts into the national education system.
