In a world where 805 million people go hungry every year, food waste doesn't make sense.
Malaysians waste 16,000 tonnes of food EVERDAY which is equivalent to 45% of the total waste generated daily. These food waste will eventually end up in landfills generating GHGs and contaminating soils and harming human health in the end.
MAEKO spent 5 years perfecting the technology required to produce a food waste composting machine that can convert food and organic wastes into usable compost within 24 hours.
Food waste accounts for 45% of the waste that Malaysians throw away everyday and that amounts to as much as 16,000 tonnes per day! It was reported by the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation in 2019 that the food waste generated in Malaysia is enough to feed 12 million people three times a day. These thrown away food will eventually end up in landfills where they rot and produce destructive greenhouse gases and release toxic chemicals into the soil which poison the groundwater we drink, pollute our rivers, endanger wildlife and eventually affect our health.
Other than preventing waste from happening in the first place, the other better solution is to compost it, making it safe and valuable to be returned to the soil. Mentari Alam EKO (MAEKO) is a company that was founded to do exactly that. MAEKO sells food waste composting machines that can turn food and organic waste into compost in just within 24 hours.
To ease the financial burden and costs required to purchase the machines, MAEKO provides the option to rent the machines for a monthly fee including servicing. MAEKO is developing a smart composting machine that integrates smart technologies to monitor the conditions of the machines and to collect valuable food waste data for their clients.
MAEKO has machines in hotels and restaurants which are the larger producer of food waste. As of 29th May 2022, they have converted approximately 8,742,788 KG of food waste into usable compost.
