The Nima Drain regeneration project is aimed at revitalizing the drainage system in Nima, a densely populated neighbourhood in Accra, Ghana. Currently, the neglected sewage system poses a great threat to the local community. The area is often flooded and the risk of infectious diseases is also increased. The project will not only address the risk of flooding but also focus on improving the quality of life for local residents.

Problem

The low-income Nima neighbourhood in Accra, Ghana is frequently affected by floods. The Nima Drain which passes through the area inhabited by more than 100,000 residents has been blocked by large amounts of solid waste. This leaves the surrounding areas with inefficient drainage capacity and makes them vulnerable to flooding. As a result, the lives of local residents are at risk, not only due to flooding but also due to increased risk of infectious diseases. In previous years, a number of local residents lost their lives after their homes were flooded. Others perished in subsequent cholera outbreaks.

Solution

The Nima Drain rehabilitation project is set up to improve the living conditions in the district by renovating the drainage system and enhancing the drainage capacity of the surrounding areas. The sewage system in the area, which represents one of Accra’s most important water drainage channels, is set to receive a complete revamp. The project also aims to support biodiversity and enhance local communities by urban regeneration.

Outcome

Once the drain is revitalized, the risk of flooding in the area is expected to be eliminated. Additional flood mitigation measures will also be applied. While planning the project, special attention is paid to green solutions to ensure environmental sustainability. The area surrounding the drain will also be transformed. Great emphasis will be placed on the creation of community spaces. New spots with features for social activities and public hygiene will be created as well. The area is set to become walkable, bike-friendly, and accessible to people of all ages. In general, the quality of life of local residents is expected to improve significantly.
