The city of Baguio in the Philippines has recently completed a yearly long project of improving the city's street and park lighting. The project included the replacement of more than 7,000 street lights with LED lighting, and also the replacement of park lights at the Burnham Park and Chinese Garden, in collaboration with GE Lighting. This project will help the city improve in terms of energy efficiency, maintenance costs and wider city ambience.

Problem

Baguio City in the Philippines is a popular summer tourist destination and in recent years the local government has committed to a Clean & Green Environment Programme in order to re-energise the city. Key part of this plan has been to replace the city's street and park lighting, as this will help the city cut down in costs and energy consumption.

Solution

The project was completed in March 2022 and was funded under the city's supplemental budget. It included the replacement of 7,485 street lights with LED fixtures along major roads in the central business district. It also included the replacement of park lights at the Burnham Park and Chinese Garden, in collaboration with GE Lighting. The company installed LED lights specifically designed for parks; they provide suitable light output that reduces glare while been energy efficient. Next the city plans to replace street lights along alleys in the different villages to address the complaints of village officials about busted lights.

Outcome

The project is part of a wider sustainability effort by the local government and aims to bring savings in terms of energy consumption, cut down maintenance costs and also improve illumination of the city. Replacing the lights at Burnham park is expected to save the city ~60% in energy costs. The LED lights employed along a 3-km stretch of Kennon Road are expected to bring estimated savings of US$212,400 per annum in energy and maintenance costs. Also, better illumination of streets is expected to improve the overall ambience and feeling of safety for residents and tourists.
