Susamati - Water-reducing toilets with black soldier fly

Susamati has designed a water-saving toilet that only uses one cup of water for each flush, to address the water scarcity issue. Each toilet also comes with a black soldier fly kit. The kit helps inoculate the pit with larvae to biodegrade the faecal sludge, reducing the need for the waste to be drained manually.

Additional information

This case study has been created as part of Footprints Africa's work to build a comprehensive open-source database of circular economy initiatives in Africa. We are doing this in collaboration with the African Circular Economy Network (ACEN), as part of our programme to support the circular economy transition in Africa.
