EroeGo is rescuing imperfect foods from various sources, especially from the local farms, and delivering it upon subscription to the doorstep of customers. By doing this it is contributing to the reduction of the food waste in the region.
The current grocery ecosystem allows a third of the food grown globally is wasted. Especially in the UAE, 1 million tones of perfectly good food is wasted every year (in the UAE the average person wastes 197kg every year). A lot of this waste is caused by the 'ugly' problem - this bit of veg is 'too big', that one is 'too small', and the other has a 'funny shape'. Other common reasons include:
- Items being close to their ‘sell by’ date
- Excess produce not being needed
- Packaging that is out of date
- Cosmetic reasons, such as unusual coloring
Additionally, the food waste on it's own is not a matter of a food produce waste, but also the resources, such as water and energy, needed for the production.
EroeGo embraces imperfect food, collects it, and creates an affordable subscription solution for regular door-step delivery. It makes it attractive to the customers as it saves time and money. The subscription starts at 50 Dhs (around 17 US Dollars) for a small box of vegetables (4 kg) up to 177 Dhs (60 US dollars) for a large box of fruits. It provides options of once or twice a week delivery and helps with the recipes. And, for every box delivered, EroeGo claims to provide meals for two people facing hunger to help fight inequality.
The EroeGo project is operating in its Beta mode, raising investments in order to create an conscious grocery shopping app. It has been recognised as one of the raising food waste startups in the MENA region.
