By implementing a waste-to-energy plant, Bogotá will become the first city in Colombia that produces energy out of decomposing inorganic waste through heat.
With over 7 million people and a landfill "Doña Juana" that has been operating since 1988 Bogotá has been facing an enormous environmentally and socially problematic. Taking into account, that according to the data from the city municipality, Bogotá produced in 2021 almost 3 tons of waste.
With a landfill running out of space and communities living close to it; protesting for better measures and alternatives to reduce the impacts of living close to "Doña Juana".
As an alternative to provide some solutions to the communities and to the needs of the city, The mayoress of Bogotá announce that a waste-to-energy plant will be built in the Doña Juana Innovation Park, and by 2027 it is announced it will transform between 2400 and 3000 tons of waste every day, generating more than 128 megawatts of energy, enough to power all public lighting in Bogotá or more than 40,000 homes in the city.
In the application of this model, the circular economy takes a big part, the ashes resulting from the process will be sold as a construction material, and as a result, it is guaranteed the use of all the materials.
