Agricycle is operating in Latinamerica as in West and East Africa to decrease food waste and loss through the value chain. They support farmers and transforming agricultural, for instance, waste into sustainable charcoal, help farmers from business registration and export certification to an international digital communication training platform and team up with different stakeholders like NGOs.
US$3.68 trillion worth of food is thrown away each year. Food loss, which occurs when food produced never enters a market, accounts for up to 95% of food waste in Sub-Saharan Africa. The lack of preservation technologies and a demand for food is exacerbating the problem.
The East African start-up Agricycle upcycles food that would normally go to waste, enhances value chains and diversifies income for rural farmers and works all over the world to help empower rural communities. The company began with a simple-to-use solar dehydrator that allowed fruit farmers to turn perishable produce into a longer-lasting dry-fruit snack. Since then, they have created over 6,000 livelihoods.
The company is able to pay the farmers up to seven times prices than the average daily wage, Additionally, community development officers and local partners ensure the support of members that they are well-equipped to reinvest extra earnings into their families and communities. Until now, they diverted over 74,000kg of waste, created over 6,000 livelihoods and got over US$825,000 global investment.
